hi.
im new here.
that is i passed a golf ls ('76) the other day which didnt have rego but the keys in the ignition...
Found the owner, he wants to sell it for 200bucks(...) to cut a long story short.
As i currently drive a kombi and know how much that oldie breaks down, can anybody give me some info about a golf like that?
I'd like to know which parts to check which usually are broken or break down a lot (like for example in all kombi's the fuel gauge is broken..very annoying..), are parts easy to get, how much fuel it'd spent per km (does it drive unleaded?), acceleration and top sped, if it 'd be hot & smokey like the kombi, any info i can get before i sucker myself into a bad deal basically.

A bit of info on the car:
golf ls
1976 model (according to its serial nr.)
blue (my guess unprofessionally painted)
rust on bottom front doors (less than my kombi though)
rust on left front gutter
wheel-arches seem ok, so does bottom of car
upholstery has been well loved...and i mean so much that it has cuts & bruises
locks are bit tough to operate
inner front door panels are bulging
(ill find out the engine type tomorrow..)

as far as the owner told me it has 600 worth of new brakes, alternator,
radiator and battery

and it does start first time...

im having it checked for the blue slip anyway, just like some more info on the golf being new to it (more the expert on kombi's at the moment ).
and the kombi is a big spender.
likes to drink, likes to smoke, likes to spend all my money...

and can anyone tell me whereabouts i find the engine nr..?just have time to look after 1800 so its bit to dark to search around.

The golf sounds like a good starter, and cheap. Get it checked out first tho as we want you to be happy with the watercooled side of VW too!!!, Andrew

Heaps mate, its great to have you on board! Try and lift the carpets to check the floor for rust and the brake pipes for corrosion. Sounds like it might have been in the weather a fair bit. Let it idle for 3 minutes, then put your foot on the accelerator to check for oil smoke. $200 is cheap but I have seen a lot of people buy cheap golfs (and kombis!) and then have to spend a fortune on them to get them somewhere near scratch. They end up leaving VWs swearing never to go near another one again! Is the cooling system clean, is the oil clean? Sometimes you can save yourself a lot of money buy spending up on a good one at the start. Cheers Andrew

The over-reaction by some amuses me

The advice given by both Loon and Golfwise is spot on! There is no attacking of the different varieties Golfs are a very reliable, cheap and easy to fix! There may still be Kombis driving around in 2006, but I question how many engines they have had! That's not an attack, just an opinion!

gtimk5, you work on them every day....why not share your experiences about the durability and how many Kms you can expect to get out of a motor and the cost to replace one when it chucks in the towel.

i just checked for the engine nr(is it supposed to be a 9-digit #?), but a revs check tells me the details mismatch the RTA-records

engine looks clean and maintained as far as i understand it.

the owner says that the car was left to him by some irish guy who got fined for driving it unregistered. Which made him leave the state/country. Meaning he didnt pay the fine. So owner says the guy got a fine and not the car.
Since im not australian and don't know about those rules here; should i suspect the car to have a fine?
