i would also check the shocks, put all your weight on the front fender then let go quickly, if she bounces more than twice you may be looking at new shocks too... but yeah as the boys said check under those carpets for rust, and the rain rails and look at the window rubbers to see if there cracked, if cracked there is sure to be rust somewhere..
and where the clutch cable goes through the fire wall check to see if that is ok as this is a weak and common problem for the golf mk1..
    the golf is not dead.

Engine number could mean it has been changed for a later one, or a 1.8. This is not a bad thing if it goes all right. It should be something like JN 145 672
Tell us the prefix and we`ll tell you about the motor.

Sounds like the car needs a blueslip, so get em to change the number with the RTA at that time and you are in.

The driver does cop the fine. Make sure you have a signed and dated receipt from the seller with the VIN and engine number on it and that will be enough for the RTA. Anything before that date is not your fault.

Is it a 2 door or 4 door?

Where is it located? Is it near Bondi?

that sounds like a part no. The engine no. is stamped into a smooth flat section of the block just below the head and slightly to the LHS of the engine. Thats LHS of the car

    hmm
this nr came from right below a plastic cover,on the engine block which was located at drivers side of the car.
Couldnt find any other nr in the dark.
i checked the lhs, but there was just the battery and some other plastic parts...
it is a vw/audi engine though.
thats what it says next to the nr i mentioned.

ill check again tomorrow, when ill drive it down the road to the mechanic
    for the blue slip inspection.

I know of a Golf for sale in Bondi that was left there by an Irish Guy. Probably the same one
I think he owed the seller money and he was gonna sell it to recoup his loss.
He was supposed to bring it out to me, but never did. Just as well really, I have untold Mk1s and Parts.
Its meant to be a good car mechanically, but i never knew what colour it is.
If you need any help with it, just holler.

Think yourself lucky XXX-1.8T......Golfwise has been banned for that trivial **** that you were discussing this afternoon! How dare you guys be controversial...we can't have that Instead, let's fill the forum with dribble!!!!

Like Golfkart mentioned the other day, I go through phases with this forum, but the over-reacting administration always ends up pissing me off!!

mechanically it seems to be fine at first glance..(engine clean, no oildrips under car, starts first time, wheel arches and under car rust free...)
there are some cuts in the ceiling-fabric and backseat needs new fabric.
the paint looks a bit matte and is notthe nicest color blue.
rust is present on gutter and bottom of front doors, although it doesnt seem to go very deep.

well ill let you know what the mechanic says...

what is the driving like? will it pull up the hill easily or should i expect the kombi-experience? So fun to drive but so hard to get around..
