Please make sure to post in a few weeks (?) when the feature hits the stands. Could you maybe direct our attention to some of the people and cars that have inspired you along the way?
    Again, well done.
That was a nice post. Thanks

The feature probably won't hit the stands here for a few months... our Performance VW issues are already 2 months behind Europe when they eventually get here. I'll scan the cover when I get it in the mail, though.

Good question about inspiration! There's been so many Mk1s that've inspired me... though, I had a basic plan of what I wanted by about 1yr into the project. This was mainly a show-style car on the outside with some motorsport parts underneath. It had to have leather, subtle paint and chrome bumpers.

A few people don't like the car as it mixes up so many different "looks", which is fair enough, as the car's pretty weird in one sense!

It was close to finished about 6 months ago and then I went overseas and saw this in the flesh:

I've lost pics of the car, but here's some of the parts...

That just blew my mind (I must dig up shots of the bodywork!!)

And then there was this - it has a VR6 on throttle bodies and made me re-consider building a turbo 16v, due to SO much wheelspin:

This car I've never actually seen, but I love everything about it:

I'm not finished with, or even 90% happy with the car yet, but it'll do until next year and then phase two will begin once finances recover, which is basically building my dream Mk1 I'm going back to Europe in May to bring more parts home and then I'll pull the car off the road for the rest of the year and no one will see it!!!

The car is only painted in acrylic at the moment, which is absolute rubbish long-term, nor are my painting skills up to scratch by any means, so that will be the first port of call and not such a big job as the shell has been restored properly, so I'll pay for it to be sprayed professionally this time around.

The colour will stay the same as I love it, as will a 16v engine as it fits the concept well

I have a clear image of the finished car in my head and it won't cost much more to get there... just time and patience.

    Cheers

All I can see in that post is your successful bringing to fruition of the plan. Doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.
Having said that money should be furthest from the equation in the end - if you feel that you want Stage 2 to follow, go for it!
Is there part of you that wants that gearshift and brake bias adjuster to remain raw and uncovered instead of putting carpet over it? That pic you used is yelling at me!
The problem with my plan is that I see so many different pics of my future car in my head that plans seem to morph from one thing to another. I was pleased to see your plan took a year of working on the car to materialise. That's really comforting.
The current idea is neptune blue (original swallowtail colour) with satin chrome bumpers and handles, smoked lights/blinkers and charcoal wheels with an anthrocite interior (leather dash/seats/doorcards). Its been wedged in my noggin for the longest so its got precedence.
