Glad it gets the thumbs up! I've been down the coast (daydreaming of the golf while on the beach of course), but the details are:

1976, 1.6L, 4 door, Auto
I'm told it's a swallowtail (but I've yet to quite grasp the significance of that!)
Radio not original but most other things seem to be.

In the glove box are the original papers, including a letter from Volkswagen to the owner dated in 1978 about a gasket repair. I'll upload a scan if it's of any interest?

Yeah chrome bumpers... not sure about them! My mate tells me mint ones are worth a lot but these ones are a bit nackered.

It was a good buy at $330... so far

Yeah I'm coming to grips with how tempting it is to spend every spare penny on it!

Desperately needs some alloys... even just new hubcaps? The bulgey ones it has are hideous!

Would prefer a manual but it's for the girlfriend and she prefers auto.

HSY autoparts (google it) have a branch in Adelaide and always seem to stock most parts you'll need. i've always had good experiences with them.

being a swallowtail basically just means it's an early model, and has some very specific features that later model cars have.

Okie dokie! At the risk of resurrecting an old thread, here's the latest!

My baby is now cleaned up, registered and insured. I've got a new radiator ('new' relatively speaking anyway!) which I'll be fitting soon. Replaced rear tail light, fitted new intake, new leads, new spark plugs. She now starts within 2 or 3 goes instead of 7 or 10

My two main issues now are the super spongy brakes - first port of call there is replacing a leaky rear wheel cylinder. And the second issue which has me more stumped is that she's stalling when put in to gear (automatic). It's a bit odd, plenty of clean transmission fliuid. Any ideas or tips?

Oh and lastly one more thing is that the (stock) carby isn't misting the fuel under acceleration - it just squirts a stream of liquid petrol. Not sure if this is fixable or I need a new carby?

Anyway, this is obviously all just preliminary work with the sole purpose of getting me to the stage where I can justify getting serious dumpage happening
