Small pulley issue

Ok guys, been brooding on this problem for a while. I put my new motor in the car a few weeks ago, new motor had a banana mount for the alternator, thought sweet, i'll use that. Put it all in, all looking good, I go to fit the water pump and

The water pump pulley doesn't line up with everything else. Didn't even think to test fit everything before it went in! So after leaving the shed with a few spanner shaped dents in the wall, I've left the car on hold for a bit.

So my question is, can i just buy another water pump pulley that will fit? I tried to flip it round, and instead of being one belt width too far inwards, it was one belt width too far outwards. Should i buy another water pump to suit? Or should i be attempting to change the alternator mount and crank pulley so it lines up with the water pump?

Arrrrrrgh! The trials of Mk1 ownership! Any thoughts much appreciated guys

Which motor did you put in?

Which crank pulley are you using?

What sort of motor did the alternator come off?

Generally you use all the pulleys off the same motor and it will fit.

I've had to change the water pump before to allow fitting the right pulley.

I've got a good assortment here, might be able to sort you out with something.

Sorry, in my anger at the situation forgot to give more details

They're both 1.6's, the crank pulleys sit differently on each motor, one further out than the other. I thought about changing the crank pulleys, but if i do that, the alternator mount has to be changed so that lines up, but i cant see how that is done easily. The new motor has the banana mount, the old motor is just the small arm that hangs off the block. I think the motor has to come off the drivers side mount to change alternator mounts? I just started bolting things up assuming both 1.6's would be the same.

This is why i'm so confused as to what to do. Pretty much need a water pump pulley with no offset. I'll try and get pics this week if i get the time.

did the donor car have aircon? When you put your pics up we can get an idea of what is going on. Normally the alternator bracket on a Mk1 is a straight piece of metal with a hole on the engine side and an adjustment slide hole on the alternator side.

Make sure you put the pics of the bracket online as well. failing that check out vagcat.com (you will need to join-think its still free)

you should have no trouble changing the alternator mounts in car mate. sounds like you have a offset inwards pulley for the water pump when you need a kind of flat pulley right? should be no problem to find one and simply swap pulleys.... i'd offer one up but of the 5 or so i have around here, theyre all the offset inwards type.

it is possible to space the pulley out with some longer bolts and spacers if you are handy.... it'll get you out of trouble anyway....

Sounds like the one engine is later and had all the emissiosn gear on it.

Ir use a straight pulley on the waterpump and a simple setup on the alternator, not the long bracket that bolts to the water pump.

I`ll have a pulley for you, but surely someone in Melbourne has one, or what about the one off the old engine??
