Diesels use the big block mount.
It's fairly unusual to see the small block mounts in Aus, I don't think the small motors were sold by VW here.
All the small block cars I've seen have been private imports.

just trying to find out some mysteries about my new mk1
AFAIK, none were sold officially with the small engines. Exclusively, we had the aussie assembled 1.6 engined cars (I think perhaps a VERY small quantity of the earliest petrol ones were imported with the 1.5 petrol engine), and the GLD imports that have the 1.5 n/a diesel. Everything else is imported personally or I suppose back in the 80's there could have been a few organised small quantity imports of other models.
There sure are a lot of imports in australia though - south african mk1's, left hand drive cabriolets, GTI's, GLS's, even the odd turbo diesel.

somebody once told me they had a three cylinder diesel engine out of a golf. Must have been imported I guess![]()
