    removing gearbox....few problems

i decided to change the clutch as it was on its last legs, anyways i have undone the drive shafts, rear mount, passanger side mount, and the bellhousing bolts, and alligned the timing mark so it can be seen through the hole as per the users manual. but it still wont come out. it partly seperates from the block, but somethings still holding it at the rear of the box. i undid the bigger 19mm nut at the back as well. but its still very tight around that area? is there a trick to it?

    damn i hate cars....

i vaguely recall that the flywheel needed to be somewhere other than TDC for the RHS driveshaft flange to clear it. Can anyone confirm? You could try rotating the flywheel until the flange finds the cutout.

There's a tin cover plate in there that needs to come out in some cars so the flywheel can pass the drive flange. There might also be a few 6mm tinware bolts around the bottom of the bell housing you've missed too.

There should be a cut out in the flywheel to allow it past the drive flange but if you've got a later motor or a different flywheel in there you may not have the cut out.

There's a couple of locating bushes around the lower studs too, they can be a bit sticky sometimes.

I usually replace that stud and nut at the rear with a bolt to make installation and removal easier (because you can rotate the gearbox as you pull it out which helps clear that driveshaft)

i got the tinware bolts round the bottom, where is this tin cover plate supposed to be? the manual mentions it as well, taht you undo it to reveal another bolt which you must undo, but for the life of me i dont see it...

did you say the gearbox comes away from the motor? if thats the case the gearbox is all unbolted and ready to come out, with experience its best to tilt the back of the gearbox up towards the bonnet and drop it first from the wheel side under the car, by tilting the gearbox i mean really tilt it almost 90 degrees, ohh and make sure you unbolt the starter motor off as it makes it easier to take the box out

Ok new clutch is in. all good aside from a funny ticking noise when it is depressed, should i be worried? or will it wear in? it drives fine, and to be honest there is alot less funny noises coming from the engine bay with this new clutch despite the ticking............

sounds like the circlip in the pressure plate. Unless you feel that something was left in side when reassembling.

The circlip, if loose or weak can pry loose and shred your clutch friction material and pressure plate (had one go many years back after 20,000km).

dont think its that....doesnt matter, the noise went away after i took it for a proper drive. i installed a new linkage kit as well and i cant believe how much of a difference it makes. drives like a new car now.

thanks to all for their contributions.

    cheers
