    radiator swap/upgrade

ive checked the all previous posts but couldnt find anything about a new radiator, as we all know the mk1 radiator are good but there life does come to an end.... does anybody know of a radiator the will fit nicely in the mk1 engine bay? even a bit shorter so it fits under the bonnet lock, with the same hose outlets, im asumig a mk2 will fit in but is the same height i am unsure. if so has anybody got one in "very good condition" because i would like to upgrade...asap

The Mk2 radiators are the same height as the Mk1s I used to have a fair few Mk2 TDI ones in stock but not these days. I might have a secondhand one left. You have to cut and join the hoses and fit the seperate filler tank. PM me if you are interested. Cheers, Andrew

Well, I'm not an expert, but I know of at least three different Mk1 radiators...
Seems that VW couldn't stop fiddling with the layout.
The early Mk1's had a separate expansion tank, with the overflow on the LHS of the car. At some stage, VW moved to an integral header tank - my '79 Mk1 had one of these. the current GTI ('84 1. has a separate expansion tank, but with the overflow on the RHS of the car...
Go figger. Oh, the two earlier ones had lugs on the bottem that were bolted to rubber feet. The 1.8 has slip in lugs on the bottom of the radiator that slip into holes in the crossmember.

    Degassing tank

Yeah.. The couldn't make up their mind! The plastic tank is a degasssing tank and it's situated higher than the highest point on the engine. The idea is that any gasses including air from cavitation in the water pump will make their way to the tank rather than being trapped somewhere and enhancing corrosion. All of the diesels have them.

I had problems with the rally car with overheating. The radiator was blocked. I got a new radiator from Imparts here in Melbourne and changed the temperature sender. It sits nicely in the top quarter of the temp gauge while the revs are indicating "full" on the fuel gauge all night.

They carry the slightly larger GTi unit also...
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
