Yeah, I'd say they are pretty zippy. Only a manual VR would compare on throttle response, although the VR would nail either on acceleration and top end but not handling.

Here in Europe MK1s are hard to find. In the case of an original GTi it's name a price - 10,000 euro at least for an excellent original low km example. Even ordinary mk1s that are original/good condition can sell for 4,000 euro. So if you've got a good example hang on to it! The market in Australia will come back.

    Their getting very old indeed.

More hp? (pre ADR 27A for NSW)
Different rear panel and bonnet? (Don't know when that changed)
The two little blobs of weld in the join under the back?

    Yeah - pre-ADR 27A.

You can legally hang whatever induction system you want off one...

    Twin side-draft 45's - no problems

To most they are just an old car... and who wants an old car? (generally speaking)
I love them to bits.... but its just to time consuming for most to get them on the rd... I mean, even a nice one needs a ***** load of stuff to get on the rd.

Too true. It didn't help that the Oz-built LS's weren't that well built.
The German-built GLS's (I had a '79 which was good) were much better.

Every year more either get trashed or sucumb to the cancer...
Even the ones that are basically in fair shape (like mine) need a $$$ to
get back to anything resembling newish condition - unless you live in Tassie.
I'm just stunned at TassieGTI and Valver's cars...

Anyone for a Tassie MkI rescue fund
