    Is This Possible In My MK1 Golf LS?

    a few months ago i found my self my first car (mentioned in title). it was discovered on the way downtown to buy myself an ipod. i passed a house in a street we dont usually travel down and saw a golf for sale with the good looking price tag of $300. as a typical 16 yr old i was straight to the ATM to withdraw money.......... story goes on.
    About the car, engine is in good condition but high km's (over 340k), new tyres, new exhaust system, bodywork is fine with only minor surface rust (now removed), interior needs work but looks presentable with seat covers, receipts for most things (all wayne penrose)

    i was talking to a mate about future modifications, such as paint, interior re-trim, wheels etc... and he said "why dont u dump a new vw golf turbo engine in it with an aftermarket induction system". i first laughed and said "well anything is possible i guess, just wait and see".

    Now the queston: is this possible without a great deal of engineering?

    Good choice in motor though i have not done this coversion yet, it is in my list to. I'd personaly recomend that you go for somthink like a 16v or 8v gti motor which are avail off guys in this forum simply as an exercise and practise as when it came time to put one(20vt) in you would know the car well enough. i'v done a few converisions in the golfs i've owned and so the other guys in the forum. I would love to put one in but the money has always been a problem and if it wasn't i'd just pay someone but we all don't have the luxury of that so in saying that for your money would be well spent if you try 8v gti as they are a very fun motor in a mk1 and quite easy to put in, keeping in mind you will have to upgrade the brakes and poss suspension.

    Let me tell you that putting a 20v into a golf 1 is no quick afternoon job.Starting with a 1800 8v as your first conversion will keep you busy for quite a while.
    I spent nearly six months on an off between jobs on customers cars,
    fitting and fabricating parts, wiring the ecu and upgrading the brakes on my 1980 golf caddy and I do this for a living.
    The main thing is to have fun, learn about your car and then spend the big money on power.

    I`ve seen your caddy and it is fantastic, but not a job for the fainthearted or inexperienced and the engines cost heaps. A 1.8GTI or 16v motor is probably the easiest first step.

    That said 1600s go pretty good, particularly with a cam, bigger carby and extractors.

    do it. its not that bad a job. better to go for the 220 TT/Cupra lump as it boost better ( 300 bhp !! ) withiout expiring........theres a bloke in greece hoping for 1000bhp from his !

    so most agree in what i said you should start with an 8v1800 b4 you take on the 20v like i said and you being 16 well i think you should play with the 1600 till you get the hang of the car like loon said the 1600's can get going pretty well and would be ideal to learn off.

    My euro mk1 has a 70bhp 1300 lump, and sometimes i think thats fast enough, its a much smaller a lighter block that the 15/16/1800.....came as a g40 too !

    Aussies are obsessed with large engines and most consider the 1.6 too small. I had several 1300 golfs and polos in the UK and they went surprisingly fast considering. Even the 1.1s were ok if you thrashed them.
    I always wanted a G40 polo, that would be a lot of fun I reckon.

    I agree with a lot of the guys start small and work on the 1600. My first car was one and it went pretty damn well for a stock engine.
    A set of webbers or even a single DCOE webber and some head work will see you off well and some extractors never go astray. Converting to a later engine is big work, ohh and if your 16 you cant turbo it until your off your p's assuming your from NSW that is.

    ohh by the way is the car yellow by any chance? it sounds like one Wayne was selling a while back, it always looked like a good little car.
