Have you had a look at the conversions thread? Lots of good ideas in there.

Best bang for buck is the 1800s out of the MK3 CL or Seat Cordobas. Very asy install and GTI power.
Alrighty, need some advice for a new donk to go in the Mk1. Need something that will go in relatively easy, don't want to stuff around with custom mounts and stuff. Something injected would be good, don't need loads of power but enough to make things interesting.
How tricky would it be to get something like a 16v 1.8/2.0 in there? Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

A mk3 as suggested would be good. But EFI means rewiring the ECU in etc.
16V early are KJet which would be too much effort to convert.
Later ABF 16v need custom work as they are taller than the earlier 16v engines.
How much you have to spend? that will determine what you can do![]()

What about something a bit different. A 1.4 16V from a 6N Polo?
What's your budget?
What's your goal?
What's your skill level?
Only have <$4000 to spend, thinking that might not be enough for 16v/ injection. What does everyone think of an 8v 1.8? Any performance parts available for them? Main reason for going newer is to get a 5spd box, any suggestions for getting a 5spd onto the stock (or 1800) motor?
5 speed on a 1800 is easy,
just put a wanted to buy add for one, or PM Matt (golf loon) at Camden GTi... sure he has a few?
the 1800's go well, slap a weber or two on, bigger cam and a good clutch, Headers and exhaust and its more then enough power to get you in trouble
Maybe even a 2L from a mk3 would be good, better if you could find a whole car as a donor...
