A VR6 is a bit heavy in a Golf 1, why not think about a 20vt instead.Probably about he same cost but lighter, more power, done many times and easy to tune .
So I was thinking about a vr6 swap after I get my hands on a mk1
And I came across a website that sells a conversion kits MK1 VR6 Conversion Stage 1 + [EWMK1VR6S1] - $999.99 : Welcome to Eurowise Webstore
They also have wiring to join up to the stock wiring that should be released soon
So has anyone done the conversion kit ? Or one like this
And what are the most common problems when doing the swap ?
Thanks guys![]()

Don't let others put you off doing a VR6 conversion by telling you to go down the 1.8t route, do what you want to do.
Just keep in mind there are further costs and work involved with conversions like these. The Eurowise kit tempts many because it seems as tho it solves a lot of problems for not too much $$$, however you will have to look at an entirely new cooling system as the stock mk1 setup won't be enough, also keep in mind the need for brake and suspension upgrades and most likely a diff upgrade of some sort. The mk1 diffs are getting close to 40 years old now on most cars and were built for 60hp cars, you'll also most likely want some sort of LSD to keep it drivable too.
So all in all to do a conversion and to make it usable it ends up costing way more than people think when they start the project, that's why there are so many unfinished conversions all over the net, and when you cost it all up, it comes up similar to a 1.8T, which many people prefer due to the reasons aprr32 mentioned.
Saying that tho a VR6 in a mk1 would sound and feel boss![]()

You couldn't use the Golf 1 gearbox for a VR6 conversion and would best use a cable shift for the 20vt.

Good luck engineering it.
If you ever want the car to be registerable, then don't bother.
In victoria this is a non engineerable swap due to the capacticy increase vs stock weight.
Having said all that, the kit makes swapping the engine and gearbox in much easier, but there are still plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of other things to worry about. Wiring won't be easy, chassis upgrades would be crucial as well.
Also: Search.
This topic has beenm covered before on this forum, and HEAPS of info is available on various other forums such as vwvortex, so have a search and read, as you'll find lots of your questions will already be answered.
This is probably the most important reason no-one does the conversion in Australia. From what I can gather, the biggest engine that can be put in a mk1 is 2.4 N/A or a 2.0 turbo/supercharged (in Victoria at least). This is why I, and most other people, would opt of the 20vt route.
I would love to someone try and do the v5 (vr5) conversion as this would be legal to engineer (2.3lt) and register. I've seen it done in the states but never here in Aus.

That's such a shame. Would love to do a vr mk1 one day.
