Heard an interesting snippet today. Apparently the first Aussie Built Mk1s were swallowtails! I saw on today that became a racecar when new and is definately aussie built and definately a swallowtail.

The old style rear panel wasn't popular in Europe so VW changed them on late models.

The oldest Golf I have seen belongs to GTIMK5 . As I believe it is a German built 75 as I'm sure it had the so called swallow tail on it before its slight altercation on the Tasman bridge.
Because of some chassis changes it may not now have its vin.
We will have to check on m5 for that one.

Yeah, thats right Golfwise. That Golf is Gunter, the competition car. It was brought over privately in 1977, tho it was a couple of years old then. I am not sure what tail it had on it as it had been sandwitched on the bridge in peak hour traffic. I think the whole car was about 18 inches (in the old language) shorter overall! The actual rear window had a bend in it but hadn't broken.
Brackie & I are going up to the block this weekend so I will get the chassis no. then and let you all know. Thanks for the body shell Golfwise. G,wise donated Gunter to me to repair & build into a competition car back in 1996
By the way, Bens old LS had a lot of zeros in the chassis no.
Come on Ben, put on a posting for a change!!!

I still keep in touch with the new owner of the little, white 2.0, so will ask him the chassis number

He's just ordered new carpet for it and is soon to fully repaint it in mars red, so it's gone to a good home
