I was hoping a 15 x 6.5 would fit under the guards. I've owned the old girl for a while now and its time for a little TLC. I put a five speed in and big clutch brake etc new cv's now its time for mags paintjob and a window tint. This car has been an awesome little packhorse that has done heaps of work for me and averages 5.0litres / 100 km on the highway. I am finding it hard to find a mag I like

That wheel is et40. You would need a lower offset (wheel further away from the strut) to run that.

    ET 30-35 on a 6.5" would suit.

What do you think of the size and width of the mag in terms of driveability and also how it will fit under a standard gaurd. I dont want a really big tyre and i want a bit of sidewall because it often gets driven on rougher roads and also want to retain fuel economy

an 15x6.5 et 30-35 will fit just fine and work well too, you shouldnt have any problems at all.

On our cabby I have 15x7 et 30 with a 195/50 - works just fine. Tiny bit of scrubbing on the back on large bumps but nothing major.

hi gld gti we have spoken before was your name ayden? I still have the golf and what a tough little beast it is, unfortunately the build got diverted somewhat and the vehicle did a heap of work. I am motivated again and I want to finish off the car. I thought a 15 x 6.5 would be a middle of the road choice also might have a bigger rolling diameter, my fifth gear needs to be a little taller. Car is at the auto electricians. After getting caught without headlights at dusk one night I have lost the plot about the non working indicators reverse lights headlights wipers washers fan and sent it in for an electrical rebuild. When it gets back i'm going to do a bit of painting. Also looking for a turbo 1.6 block, how does the 195/50 ride on a poor surface re harshness? Any thoughts on 15 x 8 et +25

an 8 may be to big if they made in a 15 x 7 et30 it would be a better choice

    regards all

Hey mate, you would need spacers and guard work to fit those wheels up. an 8 on that offset will foul on the inside on the front, and you'd probably want camber plates up front too so they don't hang out the guards. That's a perfect size for the rear though, you'd have a bit of poke but if you fit up say 195s it would sit inside the guard.

I have 15x8 +21 (with 10mm spacers so +11) front and 15x9 +21 rear on my 4 door, with stretched 195/50s all round, with the guards rolled and a fair amount of camber in the front. there isn't much clearance though - it JUST works.

I think the magic size for mk1s is somewhere around the 7J wide and +25 to +30 range. i had 195/50s on my 15x7 +25 cup wheels and they hit the guard with the stock suspension over a big bump before they were rolled with coilovers you'd be safe though. you could even try a 185/55 on a 7J - that would be similar fitment but more sidewall to play with and you wouldn't be able to hit the guards anywhere near as bad!

of course if you roll the guards all of that^ is thrown out the window and your 7J +25 becomes a good practical middle of the range size. let me know if you need any more info!

Yes mate, glad to see your diesel is still going.

willwho's advice is right on the money.... if you go for a 7" or under wheel at ET30 or less you will have no problems.

195/50 rides just fine, not bad at all. We are doing about 850km/week in the cabby and no complaints from me or my wife (other than those caused by the worn out shocks in the front of our cabby).

185/55 would also be good I imagine (but never tried.... well I have, but that was on 14")

And because pictures (not actions) speak louder than words - and I'm procrastinating - I hope this helps :

195/50/R15 on 15x7J ET +25 all round - w/ stock suspension (only scrubbed because the suspension was flogged)

195/50/R15 on 15x7J ET +25 all round - w/ FK highsports coilovers (only lowered to a certain point - no scrub)

165/50/R15 on 15x7J ET +25 all round - w/ FK highsports coilovers (lowered alot more - sump was only off the ground by 50-60 mm no scrub obviously due to smaller tyre)

195/50/R15 on 15x8 +21 (w/ 10mm spacer) on front, and same tyre on 15x9 +21 on the back - w/FK highsport coilovers, silver project adjustable camber plates and a wizard of a wheel aligner (raised back up a bit - scrubs but only on bad bumps)

all in all - i think i've maxed out what you can do with the stock guards intact (mine will be getting chopped out a bit soon i think) but i thought i'd give you an idea of what it would all look like.

what suspension are you running?? too high an offset and you'd run into trouble - nothing some spacers can't fix though! and what look are you after?
