    Not selecting 4th..... eh??

    Ok,

In middle of putting a new motor in golfy, and i started on the links. i made sure box was out of gear, and shifter hasnt moved. (i hope anyway)

Now it will select 1st 2nd and 3rd, and reverse. but 4th wont go in, is very tight.

I undid links and tried selecting 4th by hand on the box and it still wont go in, so its not a link problem. this box worked perfect about 5 days ago before i pulled it out of donor car...

    Any ideas? im stumped.

Possible stray speedo cable plastic drive inside the box?

It does as its a plastic part but you need to ascertain whether that is the problem. It may have been moved from its spot in the box while the box was out. I had a stray one in a car here years ago that decided to shift itself and jam up certain gears, ie. reverse as I was trying to get it off the hoist.
Ifr you cannot get top gear with all the linkages off, I would guess that that is your problem there.
    Anyone else have any ideas?

make shure nothing is in the way of the selector forks....
like Doms dodgy brake line on the beige one...looped around...
other than that, take the link off the main input and see if u can select 4th from there. if so, u need to ajust the linkages.

i couldnt select 4th from the box without links. just moving the shaft by hand.

so did you establish if the speedo gear was dropped in the box?

are you sure that your selecting 4th gear position correctly with the linkages off?

yes i know where each gear is

had my bro **** gears while i watched links, reverse easy to find cause it "clunks" into place

Not sure what problem was, but with spare box i could turn the diff flange easy and the other one would turn opposite direction.

With the box that lost 4th its stiff as, even out of gear,
