Wow, that is heavy there must be some weight that can come out somewhere perhaps?

I'm not too sure about a 1.8 re P3 but either its ok as mk1 GTI's were sold this way or its illegal due to them never being sold in Australia, maybe homologation papers would do it? If you have to keep the block there is a good chance a 1.8 crank may go in, which also may or may not be legal?

If you are stuck with a 1.6 it can be bored out to 83mm and a 1.8 gti head can be fitted to an early block this could be good a laugh for revs and much bigger valves than standard 1.6.

I have figured out the classing, it is not registered as a Golf GTI but as a Golf, meaning that it dosnt have to have the heron head, meaning the late model 8v can be used (because displacement change is allowed it is not a problem).

The minimum weight for P2 which is up to 1600cc is 880kg if i remember correctly (maybe 900) and it is the same for up to 1800cc, over 1800 is 980kg

The cage is all chrome molly, so its not as heavy as it could be, but it does have a lot of bar work, mate of mine in qld is running 960kg, but we re did the floor in 3mm plate cause he planned on going to 2ltr. There isnt much more weight to be taken out (easiest way is by swiss cheeseing the bar of the trailing arm)
