    Newbie from UK, mk1 questions

Hi guys, Just moved out to sydney a couple of weeks ago. I've had 6 mk2 golfs in just about every engine configuration they came in from 1,6 Turbo Diesel to 16v. Looking at a mk1 golf out here. What engine cconfigurations did they come in?

1.5? 1.6? diesel, petrol? gti? interested in knowing what kind of varients I could get in the mk1, as there seems to be more mk1's about then mk2's for sale in sydney, cheers!

Heaps of swallow tails compared to back in the UK. I'm sure the Mk1 boys will chime in shortly but I think they are mostly 1.6 petrol ones.

Welcome to Aus! Update your location so we can point out the good buys that may be in your area at the moment.

lots and lots of 1.6 petties. a few 1.5 diesels.

probably a lot more modified ones left now than unmodified - but theres plenty of engines to go around, hehe

apart from 1.6 carb and the odd gti on k-jet, and the 1.5D, everything else is usually an import or modified - not that theres anything wrong with that.

    there's soon to be a 1.6TD and 1.9TDI mk1 driving around

welcome to the forum! where in sydney are you?

Not many Mk2s were sold here - only a few GTi's and some private imports. That would be why you don't see too many around.

On the other hand, genuine MK1 GTi's were not sold here. I think you'll only find replicas, but they are probably as good as the real thing. Most MK1s around are pretty beat up, but there are some good ones around, including original unmolested ones (like mine ). Also MK1s don't seem to command particularly high prices despite their relative rarity and desirability among some watercooled VW nuts. So you migh be able to get a bargain.

    All the best

    Welcome to forum.

There are a few pukka MK1 GTIs, I know of 2 in Adelaide. Plus the Turbo one my mate just brought over.

There are a few real MK2 GTIs over here, the Australian delivered ones have a low rent motor in them and aren't that quick. A 2 litre engine swap would improve one no end.

Go and see Matt, Golfloon for your spares.

    Thanks for the plug Gavin.

I know of a decent 1.8Kjet Mk2 for sale, south african GTI with a UK spec motor. Cheap. Pm me if you want the guys details.

Mk1 Cabrio is the closest thing you will get to a Mk1 GTI that was sold in Oz. They go from $1000 for ropey or imported early cars to $6000 for a decent 1991 or 1993 with all the extras. Not a bad option, its sunny enough here

theres a few privately imported mk1 gtis getting around my mate has a 83 Gti private import but there few and far between unfortunately, it would depend on what you wanted i suppose if you wanted to build one or just buy a mk1 and drive it.

One thing i have learned over the years if you want it you'll get it just takes time and $$$ everything is forsale, keep your eye out i found the 83 gti for my mate stupid me back then didn't realize what it was, took 6months to source my 2.0l 16v and believe me it was worth the wait
