What about the Audi 1.9L blocks? I'm not sure if they will bolt straight up to you exhaust and everything. But I have everything to make it work that I'd be willing to get rid of.

With all seriousness though, say one had the choice of the ADZ engine which i already have in my mk1, and a choice of the 2E mk3 engines. Was talking with Peter (petska) yesterday and he said that 1.8 engines are generally harder revving that the 2e. Lets hypethetically say i had an alloy welder and could block off the holes on the head, and was able to use the 2e as it is, would it be better? Or is it only tourqey and nothing else?

I had a MK1 GTI that was an 1800 DX motor, big valve head, the works. I turned it into a 2 litre with a 2E bottom end.

I felt it was a big mistake, the 1800 was revvy and hardly used any fuel the 2 litre was torquey but to get the mixture correct at the top end, it was rich everywhere else. The fuel consumption was much worse than just the increase in capacity.

If I was doing it again I would build a 1900 bottom end, keeping the 1800 crank.

I think there's one left in a Cordoba there still.

Prices on gearboxes are great too.

It's a self service wrecker so you have to pull it out yourself.

Geoff Hale and I took about 2 hours to extract a motor and box yesterday.

The trick with buying motors from Imlachs is to strip any accessories you don't want and leave them there.

I removed everything except the waterpump and starter motor. They didn't charge me for the water pump.

    Box $125
    Bare Motor $120
    Starter Motor $38

The surprise was the gearbox. I was just grabbing it as another 5 speed for my collection thinking it would be a CHB which is the stock box for Cordobas.

I didn't bother to check the number until I got it home to discover it's a 2Y!

The 2Y is a close ratio box from a MK2 16V, how it got into a Seat is anyone's guess.

They're a bit stronger than other 020 boxes as they have a 24mm input shaft.

Of course clamped between the motor and box was a 210mm clutch and fly wheel.

    An excellent day's shopping!
Pete GREAT info as always mate, just stubbled on this tonight, been a while since i dabbled in the oldies. I started my Apprenticeship in 88 so was lucky to put my hand on all these motors and watch the madmen in Scotland go to town on them. ( yes i did fit new plugs to KR s at PDI when the plugs were transport plugs LOL) anyway great to see you guys are still at it and im enjoying having a read. I dont get on much and its good to see. Im getting back into the conversion stuff myself, just about finished one on here but its low key at the moment and im building a mad Polo for me. Just doing normal work on an oldie can be hard i find now, you mention the 2Y. I done a lot of work to a Mk2 a while back and i had to fit a new clutch. It had the wrong tranny which made it hard when the splines were different. Was a good bit of a learning curve for my Apprentice at the time, moral was to fit clutch plate to the input shaft before refitting to the car as its way too late when its married up. Thats the trouble with stuff thats been modified and then finds a new owner, anyway sorry for the rant ill sit back and enjoy, oh and good luck with the conversion if i can input i will
