Hey bud, my white golf has a 2e 2.0L engine from a mk3 and the mk1 extractors fit fine? However yes, the head will need modifying to fit the carb manifold. I heard it can be welded? Perhaps someone else can add to that

hi george, thanks for your help, but what exactly on the head needs to be welded??? because the intake ports are huge man, like double the size the carb head??? i would love to post some pics of it all but i cant work out this photo bucket business.

You need to rethink this install mate. You are heading into a world of hurt. Having done transplants myself, 2 litre into a MK1 GTI and KR into a MK1 GTI plus others.

You can put an 1800 head onto the 2 litre block but I don't think your inlet manifold will be quite right still, although I may be wrong. The carb will be miles too small, the engine will be breathing through a drinking straw and not a hose pipe, as well as being on restricted rations.

How were you planning on igniting the mixture? The 1600 dissy won't run off the 2 litre intermediate shaft and the hole in the block is bigger on the 2 litre, so it will flop about like #### in a shirt sleeve.

If you address the above, the clutch will be the next thing to sideline the project. The weedy 190mm clutch would be hopeless without an upgrade, preferably to 210mm, which needs a flywheel too. This might not fit in the 1600's bellhousing so then you are into a box as well, plus driveshafts.

Lastly, brakes? How are you going to stop it with an extra 40ish hp?

I haven't worked on any non-GTI MK1s so can't tell you what mix of parts works best but there's plenty on here that do know.

I admire your willingness to have a go and I am not trying to burst your bubble but you have some thinking to do first.

Ask questions, we are here to help.

    Gavin

It's possible to make a block off plate that will cover the unused pars of the inlets and allow the 1600 manifold to bolt up but as Gav points out there's a bunch of other stuff to figure out too.

In addition to the above there's a fair bit of mucking about with engine pulleys to sort out as well.

Gav, couldnt he just get a mk3 dizzy and run that, as well as possibly just wiring it without the ecu? (if thats how it runs im no expert)

Also, he could get a passat manifold and 32/36 which are reasonable to find and wont cost an arm and a leg, that would accomodate for the size of the inlet manifold i'd imagine? Also if he managed to find a 5 speed gearbox, which also isnt very hard to find, that should answer for the cluth/flywheel problem as well (assuming he buys them together)

Im going to do the same thing to mine, however already have all the above mentioned things, and i dont see why it shouldnt work, apart frm blocking off the head where the injectors were.

George, A number of things come to mind with your question. The MK3 dissy is electronic, not sure how many MK1 Golfs are that way equipped over here, being pommie and all that. Also, I was brought up on a healthy diet of K-jet and haven't had a carb since my XR3 Escort...

If the Golf is electronic, there's no advance on the MK3 dissy, a static 8 degrees of advance would be a boring engine, it's more of a crank angle and spark distributing device. The plugs will be different.

5 speed box is the go and the clutch and flywheel combo to match. The plate has to match the gearbox splines. MK3 boxes have larger input shafts than MK2 8V and MK1 boxes.

No idea on the Passat manifold but if pushed I'd say no. The head on the engine he has has big tall ports not round ones.

Seriously, for me it would be easier to inject the engine, than mess with all the other stuff.

You can make a spacer to fill the gap between the small dissy and the big hole. Not hard to do and I had a drawing with dimensions on years ago. No idea where it is now though. Moved house 7 times and countries once since them.

Also, you can drift out the pins that hold the cogs on the dissy shafts and swap them over.

    Keep 'em coming.

Thanks guys for all the info, this 2l that i have has the dizzy and most wiring attached to it with the mk3 coil, i do have a passat manifold with the 32/36 carb, but i scored a lynks manifold with a i think its a 45m webber. and for the braking, i will have a mk2 gti set up with the mk3 master. i also wanted to do a little work to the head while it was out, like clean up the ports and cam??.
Thank you all once again................any one with a complete 2e early model that they want to sell or swap.
