I think i might have to go witht he last pic i saw, as i have that bracket for the power steering. I am considering putting in power steering if i can find it second hand for cheap.

Found out that i have the wrong gearbox and the one i have doesnt work. Hence the work will have to be delayed

I will take some pics of it, perhaps im just not putting the right ones together ??
Do you have any ideas on power steering at all and how that goes in and where i can get it from?

    thanks, george.

There is NO power steering rack that will fit a Mk1 George. They made em in the USA for LHD, but never for RHD.
Piss the P/S pump off and get a different waterpump pulley and then you can run the Mk3 serp belt setup, like Pete Jones`s picture shows, or get a different V belt pulley and keep the Mk1 setup.

Do you have a Mk3 Alternator??

Nothing wrong with that MK 3 box.

You'll just need to change the output flanges and find a 5 speed mount for it.

Alternatively you can change to the matching 100mm CVs on your current drive shafts.

Been working on the wiring and it has a hell of a lot wiring problems. gonna get that sorted out shortly.

My dads mate just got here he is going to weld up some stuff int he engine bay to support and fix a few of the brackets.

As for the pully ill have to find a few pulleys and see if i can make it work that way.

Got the bracket welded on as it was cracked down the bottom. Also did a touch up on the Suspension mount thingos (not sure what they are called) as they have a bit of a crack too, but mostly just re enforcing it.

Went through all the wires and found out that some of them were broken and old, and some were completely pointless. I will be rewiring some wires and will try my best to hide some of the wires where i can and make it look more presentable and neater.

I will be starting with the sanding just after i finish eating hahaha. hope it comes out good.

    Small update.

Dismantled almost everything in the bay and have been sanding for 2 days straight (i can hardly type due to my fingers hurting so much hahaa).
Its slowly coming along but its very hard to get in those little spots. I think i might just get a wire brush and put it on a drill and see how that goes. I also grinded this mount of some sort that was pointless with nothing sitting on it. I had a bit of research and not much golfs had it. (you'll see in missing on the left of the bay in the pic below.)

I got a waterpump pulley off a bmw and my old man gonna cut and weld it to fit. I think that is the best way to go about it coz im broke and we got the pulley free. It just about fits just needs some minor adjustments.

About the powersteering in a MK1, is there nothing that can be done? Perhaps get it off a MK2 or MK3 and shove it in some how?
    Any tips...

yea engine bays are a real PITA kinda thing to do. so many different surfaces do sand.

keep at it though. it'll be worth it in the end, esp given that the rest of the car looks so good!

And it's no to the powersteering. you don't need it.

You won't need the power steering, it's such a light car.

Coming together well, you are putting in the hard work

    I hate sanding dude...

From now on....I just use the grinder with the stripping disc. Takes of the paint really fast and your left with a smooth metal finish.

edit: your left with something like this.

Its good for flat surfaces but its going to be a little challenge around those corners.

Well fellas, as you'd imagine im still sanding and its going by very slowly.
Im going to try out a this new sandpaper so hopefully it goes a bit better. My goal is to start spraying prime by sunday hopefully (if im not that lazy).

This was my solution to the water pump pulley. I have cut off the top plate off the pulley that was too big, then i got a BMW w/p pulley and welded the plate on the bottom. Simply drilled new holes and was good to go.

A question i have to ask is
after moving all the wires and getting to know the bay a bit better, i have found this plug sort of thing. At first i thought it was a relay of some sort. But then i opened it and it seem to be a plug. Can anyone tell me what it is as im lost and confused haha??
