Yea that Head (not block) will have a corrosponding hole. It'll probably just get filled by something. I've can't remeber off the top of my head with what, but I'm sure someone else will chime in

So it has been a good few days of cleaning the engine out and getting it ready to spray. I have lost a bit of motivation to spray it so i'll see how that goes. For the moment im not spraying it.
The engine is finally out and the problems have started rolling in ( SOOO unexpected).
I have found out that one of the engine mounts are wrecked so that will need welding up. The alternator wont fit as the brakets and pully dont align. So ill have to either get MK3 brackets or or think of something else.
I have got this idea of putting power steering into the golf, hence it will make it easier to put the bracket on. has any one else had this problem witht he alternatroa dn the bracket???? any info on it would be aprecciated.

Are you going to a serpentine belt? Apparently they can get a little close to the right hand chassis leg depending on the setup. Nothing a hammer and the Oxy won't fix, though.![]()

Stick a big bolt in it.
It's just a water gallery.
Grease a M10 tap up well to catch the chips and tap the hole.
Flush the water jacket out well afterwards.
You can get a M10 plug from a bolt supplier or just use a long M10 bolt.
I'm told true backyarders just jam a wheel nut in there with a bunch of loctite.
Do this BEFORE you put the motor in!
Those 1800s are great!

Thanks pete, i have been told to do that exact same thing. I was unsure of what bolt to use but you just cleared that up.
When you put in your 1800, did you use your old 1600 alternator and brackets or how did you go about it.
This engine i have, had powersteering and the bracket is different. My old man and i tried putting on the other brackets from the 1600 but the puleys dont align with eachother. do you have any sudgestion. it seems that the waterpump pulley is too long i beleive and i dont want to take it off as ill have to re - adjust the pulleys etc. (too much work)
Do you have any ideas at all.
George
I think with the pulleys just use a combination of new and old pulleys, and maybe some washers as spacers to help align the brackets.
You should be able to take all of the 1600 pulleys across to the 1800 and they should line up.
I've used about 3 different alternator setups and they all work.
Where you might have issues is the water pump pulley off the 1600 might not fit on the 1800. In that case you can put a 1900 water pump into the 1800.
Watch out that you're not putting the water pump pulley on the wrong way round, the dish in the pulley sits over the end of the pump. ie the belt groove is inset NOT offset.
Grab some photos of what you've got on the motor and spare then we should be able to see if you've got a combination that will work.

Here's another way, although you'd have to source a few bits. This lets you use a 90Amp alternator from the donor car.
This is a 2.0 motor but the same setup would work on the 1800.
More info on this conversion here. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=19887
