Very common to have issues with that steering rack mount.

Often the fix involves adding a brace across the firewall to stop the mount flexing.

I had it happen to one of my MK1s and it's an interesting driving experience to say the least!

If your axle nut was loose for a while you might find you need a new wheel bearing.

Yep, and they are a great bike...

This wasn't my one, but it is very similar...

Is it only common on Cabbys? I've never heard of it before and none of my MK1's ever had this problem.

But, I was driving Golfs 30 years ago.

Apparently very early Mk1's didn't have a rubber mounted steering rack, and they don't seem to be affected...

Unlike the Mk2's, the rubber mounted racks only 'centralize' on the 1 steering rack mount, not both.
Also, the Cabby's are 300kg's heavier, and came with wider tyres as standard...

    I think that's an understatement...

Yep, I won't be surprised if the wheel bearing is damaged...
That said, if it's just a rumble, it can wait... lol.

So, the car is back together, but now it won't start...

It started for about 5 seconds, and then died...
Now, it won't start at all...

I have good spark, and 1/4 tank of fuel, and nothing relating to the running the engine has been touched...
Fuel pump fuse is ok too...

The only thing I can think of is that maybe, because the car was jacked up at the front for a couple of days, the fuel lines have drained back into the tank...

If it ran for 5 seconds it sounds like a fuel problem. Is the pump making a noise? If yes? Take out one of the injectors and see if fuel comes out when you crank it over. If there is fuel then it's electrical.
