That was me driving the Van. I live on Majura road out on a farm near the Springfield farm. Good to see a Mk1 drive around.

Looks like the bearings on the main shaft of my gearbox are now stuffed...
Up on the car stands, and lots of rumbling right up till the clutch is depressed, regardless of gear...

I feel that this is going to get expensive...

    So, a couple of questions...

    1. How 'straight forward' is splitting the box and replacing the bearings?
    2. Anyone recommend a good vw gearbox mechanic around Canberra?
    3. Anyone have a 020 gearbox going cheap?

I've just fitted a MK3 5 speed box that I got cheap. Lots of places have gearboxes but for more than I was willing to pay so ring around a bit to find what you want.

Are you running rod operated gearchange or cable? I've got a spare cable one which has a hydraulic clutch.

    Cheers

    Paul

Currently it has the factory fitted '020' five speed box with rod operated linkages and 100mm flanges.

From what I understand, changing to a cable setup will be a lot more involved...

Stripped down the my damaged box, only to find all rivets in place, but lots of teeth missing off of both the pinion and crown's.
Oh, and every bearing is pretty much stuffed...

Picked up a second hand box (for much more than I like), and fitted it, only to find out that the left hand front wheel bearing is also stuffed...
    Grrr...

Thankfully, new bearings are only $25 per side from the local bearing shop...
Just awaiting delivery, and then fitting them to the hubs / carriers...

Mick, it's not a slot car. You need to drive it a bit slower.

    Slower??? Slower??
How much slower can you go than a low compression 1.8 k-jet?

    lol.

Hoping to strip the hubs/carriers off of the car tonight, and then split them tomorrow...
Gonna be damn heavy on the bus to work though...
    lol.
