NA hp from 8v counterflow vw motors is hard to come by...
it seems like a ton of effort to build an 8v when you have a 16v motor available to you.
with the money i've put into my 8v build, i could have been driving around in a 20v mk2 already...

yea I'm not sure what's missing in the numbers with Pete's car. But he reckon's it's there on the track.
I'm pretty sure Tim's engine had flat top pistons. GX standard is 8.5:1 CR, he's would have had to have pistons. currently it's got a standard GX in it, and probably like 110HP or something. but his built engine was good for 130-140HP depending on cam. I was also looking for that info in a thread too, but got sidetracked. oospy.
Gordo. if you go with a big cam [288-292] with some trick head work [read: so the head flows as much as the cam needs] and with a proper [proper!] tune, it should make 150HP. It'll chew juice and be really lumpy, so not great for the street. but would be fun.
your CR would need to be kinda high, which also kills streetability. I'm thinking 12:1 roughly. it'll need 98-100 octane petrol, min. it'd be a roit on the track though.
or. you could get a 16V, even a 1.8KR is std 139HP add mild cams, valves and minor head work, with twins, and already be looking at 140-150HP, let alone adding some more compression and more head work & bigger cams. AFAIK. [I'm a little rusty on 16V's...]
mhmm. the 1.8 kr motor puts out 139hp stock...
if you're going to rebuild it (seeing as you have heads and blocks lying around) a mild port and new bearings and some autotech cams will have you easily around the 150hp mark.. or more depending on who you know to mess with your k-jet fueling.
if i wanted just a bolt in k-jet upgrade, 9a 2.0 block, kr head, 270 degree cams, port-age, 50mm inlet manifold and brum...
if you have all the other bits and bobs around, it's just cams and headwork.
oh, plus, twin carbs look heeeaaaaps better when you can see them. in an 8v, they just point at the bulkhead. with a 16v, they're shiny and in your face! :)
Getting big number at the wheels with any Mk1 isnt easy...
If you want to drag your mates off at the traffic lights what are you doing with a Mk1? Get a Integra TypeR or something with an SR20 easy cheap reliable HP at the drop of your right foot.
If you have the parts laying round I say go for it but remember getting 100hp at the wheels with an 8v revs which means money which means job which means lots of headaches.
Go for the Alfa if I wa you Gordan
Ok fellas enough of the BS.. Here's the stats of Tims engine to the letter...
9.5CR stock GX engine with DX piston's, 276 TT cam, autotech valve srings, matched ported head & ported runner's in the intake, audi throttle body, & volvo fuel distributor & airflow flap. stock warm up reg. hurricane extractor's & 2" free flowing system. Mk2 GTI dizzy. stock advance. the only headwork was the port entry's to match the intake gasket. wasn't really all that special.
it was making the 66kwatw with the stock cam & fuel system. not even the GTI cam or volvo fuel setup!

The blue looks good too. i'm geussin your dad is just using acrylic?
i'd also be interested to know how much paint he uses to spray the whole car. and how many colour coats as well, if that's not asking too much. :)
