My MK1 build
Hey everyone, my name's Elias. Around 4/5 months ago I took on an abandoned project. A 1976 2 door mk1 Golf. I guess most of the hard work was done by the previous owner (thankfully)! But with me being so picky and stubborn I wanted more, I wanted something different. I've seen some very nice builds and I just wanted to stand out of the crowd. So I decided to do a MK4 dash conversion
With my little knowledge in the whole mechanical field I've been struggling to do a lot of things. But I'm learning! And unlike most people, I love a challenge! Whether I fail 100 times before I succeed, I still won't quit.
I'll try keep up to date and persistent with this thread. Sorry to those who have to read all my stupid and silly questions. Here are a few pics of my build so far.

I kind of gave up on the electrical ****. Absolutely done my head in. The car has a mix of MK1 and MK3 wiring and it's all over the place, as you can see from the pictures. I pulled up the diagrams from all three builds and as I'm a newbie, I just can't seem to wrap my head around everything. So complicated. My brain hurts
Luckily I know someone who might be able to rewire the entire car with the MK4 loom. Yay haha.
Also, I'll be getting a nice slim alloy radiator built, engine bay will look minimal. Shaving off the back end (I'll have photos once it's all done) and rewire and tidy up everything in the front. So messy!
Haven't got it running yet, apparently it was test run almost over a year ago. So moment of truth today!
I'm thinking of getting a dump pipe for an exhaust, just straight down the middle out the centre of the back.. kinda like the old rotors. Half body roll cage willbe going in. Thinking some nice bride buckets and a momo wheel and a nice short shifter! Sound deaden will be a definite must! A lot of it!! As the back half of the car will stay bare, no panels, no carpet, no nothing! Leaving it bumperless on both ends. Investing in some top end KW coilovers later down the track. I want this thing to look fat!
I'm open to all opinions, ideas, feedback would be great, all negativity is welcome too. It's always nice to know what people are thinking, good or bad

Very nice! I am not very much into old car restorations and don't have much knowledge about it. But is it possible to put a mk6 GTI engine on one of these?

Wow there's some history.
el_foolio, Ed C and then some other guy owned it.
Are you in Tassie?
-
Haha, no but I did buy it off a guy from Tassie.

Subbed, keen to see how this build goes Good luck with the dash convertion im doing ome at the moment too, you will feel so awesome when it all fits and bolts up. Going to use the mk4 cluster?
-
Nice Dubstein ! What kind of conversion are you doing ?
Definitely going to be using the mk4 cluster !
Tried to start it yesterday, no fuel going through. I think the pump needs changing.
I was thinking of putting in a bosch high flow pump but I have no idea what to do :/
-
Why are you cutting down a big dash when there are heaps that fit straight in, like the Daihatsu one that Dubstein has put in his MK1.
-
Because why not If he get it to fit props to him.
What fuel pump are you running with the vr6 at the moment?
-
I can get it to fit, I like the way it would look in it. It's big, but there will be plenty of room since there will only be the front seats installed.
To be honest, I have no idea what fuel pump is there. Looks like the standard 8v one.
A friend came past to help me, he was saying it's most likely the fuel pump. No fuel going through any of the lines.
It kicks, just doesn't start.
