alright fellas, dont worry it wasnt my golf that was rolled it was a friend of a friends son. i dont know if you guys know but i have a 76 2dr 1.6 on carb but its running a bit cr*p latley and i cant afford to put a 1.8 or any bigger motor in at the moment as $ is low at the moment.
anyway this golf is one of the last 1.6 carby imports but the motor was rebuilt etc the day before it was rolled, the guys son evidently couldnt handle the power the beast was putting out and put it in the bush on its roof, its a shame too as it looks like it was a sweet looking 4 door. anyway the body is totally written off and the interior has been gotten to by the weather but the engine has been sat there in the car not run etc for about 18months, but it looks mechanicals good and all the ignition timing and leads are in perfect cond which is what i want it for really. i ended up offering the guy 50 buks for the thing, so ill be picking it up next week sometime to strip it.
the coolant and oil werent drained so theres just sludge in the radiator and hoses, do you guys rekon this will pose any problems with the block and head etc?
anyway ill try and find a camera to post some pics of my car and this crashed one.
cheers sam

How long has it been sitting, Sam? Shouldn't be a problem if it's only a short time. Just give her a good flusssssh or better still take the motor to a radiator specialist and get it powerflushed (take the thermostat out first!) As for the oil, it's good that it was left in. Once you get the motor installed get the oil hot and then drop it our and change it and the filter. If the motor was rebuilt the day before the car was totalled the oil should be good anyway.
its been sitting there for about 18months without being run i think. he had the bottom end rebuilt and the head done before it happend so it sould all be in good working order, just a bit of surface rust on the outside surface of the block and head, all the other parts are fine. only possible damage could be to the 4 speed grbox from the wheel being folded in when it rolled, but its only a 4 speed. im just stuck for a place to put it and strip it at the moment.
nice lookin golf sam. Welcome to the forum. What month 76 is it, looks like a swallowtail bonnet. Take a pic of the back for us and I`ll tell you if its a super rare swallowtail.

i dont know what month it is, but il try and sort out a pic of the back for you. looks like im going to have to strip it in my driveway (background of pic) so that could get interesting. any of you guys got a lumpier cam to stick in a 1.6 cause i have a carby off a 2ltr escort on at the moment but i dont think im getting its full potential.
hey mate, im running the same setup as you, 2L escort carb in the 1.6. id love a nice new cam, was looking at getting a GTi cam.
Sam it should have a compliance tag with the date on the bonnet slam panel ,right hand side.
Or left hand side if you`re not from Tasmania
