OK, I put on 195/45's and it seems to have solved the issue.

Good choice, that size has a very similar diameter to the standard 14" wheels - only 5mm difference.

I was getting a large amount of passenger foot well flooding and it turns out my scuttle tray grommets were jam packed with dirt. Water was gathering in there, but I still can't really see where it was getting into the compartment.

It looks like someone might have done some repair work on the scuttle tray already? How does it look to you guys?

Also, the scuttle rain cover is degraded and falling apart. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement that isn't going to cost the earth?

I've seen stock like this https://au.vwheritage.com/vw.cfm?act...as/?src=slider

    but can't find stock

    TIA

Looks typical MK1 to me. You need to have a look underneath to check if there's any rust.

Rainwater collects there when the grommets are blocked and seeps past any holes in the firewall so that it drips inside and soaks the carpet. Leave it long enough and you get rust in the floors.

The rain cover is cosmetic, it doesn't do anything except look pretty.

Thanks sports racer - good to know about the rain cover I'll toss it!

I found this thread which mimicked my exact experience. View topic: Leak Problem - Please help! – The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

I am scared by the idea of rust. The last owner had it garaged, so I'm hoping that this water issue is only fairly recent :S

Rust gets worse over time. The sooner it's found and treated the easier it will be.

Pull up the carpets and check out the floor. And make sure it's all dry underneath, even if you have to take out the seats (easy job) and sit there with a hairdryer (hard job unless you've got heaps of porn on your phone to watch while it's drying).

Thanks, yep there is a bit of water there.

Do you know what this is? All I can think of it's part of the (no longer working) after-market air con?

Don't get the scuttle tray from VW Heritage. its for the South African Version.

I learnt the hard way, I have one in my Garage... Luckily got a refund and was told to keep it.

I know Mark from Classic-vw in the UK is making a mould, but I think this has been in the pipe line for a long time with very little progress.

Keep your eye out on EBay, I got a decent 2nd hand one for not much money.

    So far:

205s -> 195s to eliminate rubbing on the chassis
Learnt about scuttle trays and cleaned out accordingly
Replaced shifter bushings and gear linkages (Thanks fellow VWW member EltonKing for the hand I couldn't have done it without you)
Replaced front end tie rod and end (that was what was causing the play in the steering wheel, the steering rack is fine)

    Next on the list:
    Replace leaking core/welch plugs
Work out why the wiper squirter motor isn't squirting
Maybe - Remove the aftermarket air con.

Thanks everyone so far for your tips... Having fun learning and she's coming along!
