Thanks MJV, will keep an eye on that - haven't gotten to the steering rack yet!
Are you sure the whole rack needs replacing? Usually it's the tie rod ends that wear out and they are much easier to replace than the rack.

OK. So I get into the car today, and the passenger side foot wells are FULL of water. I'm talking 2-3 inches deep. It's almost like someone has carefully poured a whole bucket of water there. Strange. We had some stormy weather in Melbourne.
Any idea where this water could get in? I can't see drip marks or running water trails anywhere and the roof is new-ish. The seats, door upholstery etc are completely dry.
The to-do list keeps on growing :\
Windsreen seal at edge of the dash?
Check drain holes in scuttle tray are clear.

Hey dubbers... We're getting there! Would post pics, but the car essentially looks exactly the same.
Wondering if someone could give me some advice regarding tyres? Currently I have 205/45zr16 fitted but they are rubbing on the chassis with any sort of hard turn.
It's been suggested that 195/45zr16 would solve the issue. I quite like the 16' and would like to keep them if I can.
So I guess I'm looking for suggestions on what tyre size you would recommend (and where I might pick some up from???)
I'm also thinking I could leave the 205's on the back and put 195's on the front?
Thanks in advance guys.

You might have to go to 40 profile. 16's on a MK1 need very low profile tyres.
You're probably rubbing on the guards, not the chassis so maybe folding up the lip on the guards might stop the rubbing.

Sorry my car terminology is not very good but it's more the front wheel guard on the inside edge of the tyre.
It was suggested that I could push the are in in slightly so that it no longer made contact with the tyre, but then my other issue was that the opposite side of where is was rubbing wasn't that far away from an engine mount, so i didn't want to mess with it...
Can you post a pic or two to show where it's rubbing on the bodywork.
Does it only rub when you turn the steering all the way, on both front wheels or just one?
Have a look at where it's rubbing and work out if the tyre was skinnier (195 or 185 instead of 205) will it help or would a smaller tyre (40 profile) help. Or should it be skinnier AND smaller.
Cheers
Paul

RHS rubs on the front at not quite full lock turning left
LHS doesn't rub on the front, but touches at the back on full lock (also turning left)
sorry about the rotated pics I couldn't work out how to get them right
