Just looking at my manual now (thanks Eric)!
Glad it arrived safely, would you be able to claim anything about it ? the hand brake was working fine before it departed.

    Yeah,
at first it didn't feel like a normal handbrake but i didnt think much of it and i thought that was just the way a mk1 handbrake was!
When i looked at it properly the next day i saw that the 4mm handbrake cable was snapped/sheared!!! how the... they managed that i do not know.
SInce i didnt pick up the damage when i was signing the car off it might be a little difficult claiming it back. i will still try however.

So does anyone have a handbrake cable i can buy off them?

I also drove it to touch rugby, and on the way back there was a kid in a daihatsu charade that was looking at my car at the lights.
i took off slowly wanting to look after my little car, but this kid in the charade stared back at me as he was going faster than me.
I couldnt resist overtaking him then. Well i got home and the car was boiling over a bit. (its not like i overexerted the car at all)

Will a simple service with new oil and coolant minimise the car boiling over???? what else could be wrong?

see how the temperature goes after giving the radiator a good flush, make sure your thermo fans coming on too. may aswell check that the thermostat is working properly at the same time could be a bit bunged up. otherwise take it to grant and he'll no doubt diagnose it straight away! have some cables here if you get stuck. good to see its over this way will have to pop down and check it out sometime. are you going to leave it in the gti trim or take it back to stock golf?

What was the temp gauge sit Anton ? The thermostat was newly replaced 2 years ago when I changed coolant. I'd say it's about the time to do a coolant flush again, but I don't think the car has overheat problem.

    Btw, don't race the beauty

Hi there again, Thanks for the advice there on the overheating. I have changed the oil to castrol GTX and also changed the coolant to Castrol GTX. Mainly because i remember an aussie cricket player advertising it ha ha, not really.
But as a result of the oil change the engine definately runs quieter and smoother and has made a difference in how the engine runs.
And well it hasnt overheated again.
The water temp gauge sits at just under 100C is this the correct temp? i know oil temp is 70C in a normal engine. Sometimes the water temp gauge in the console goes up quite high but i think it is just it being tempramental.
I also waxed the beast. and put the front air dam on. which also makes quite a difference at motorway speeds.
So quite happy with her so far, only need to get the hand brake and water washer in. then get it inspected and reggod
i will now go take a picture of it in the garage! as i feel the need.
Also Grant, the back brakes are still drum brakes.

Well thanks for the compliment, I wish it was a real GTI but it is originally a 1976 golf LS which has had its engine and cosmetics modded to look like the GTI.
I test drove a mint condition 1 owner 1.6 GTI in NZ and i have to say there is not much difference at all between the two. So I am very happy with it.
