    Mk3 starter into Mk1 - Pin 15a wiring

    Quick question.

I am installing a mk3 starter as part of my 5 speed swap. The Mk3 starter doesn't have the second spade terminal on the starter solenoid (pin 15a) for the points ignition system. I know that it supplies +12v while cranking.

Am I able to simply replace the the spade on the wire with a ring terminal and connect it to the post on the solenoid that goes to the starter motor brushes? or does it need to be shielded or similar?

No, the idea behind this is that when the starter is activated it also switches +12V thru to the coil as you mention.
If you connect to the solenoid main with a ring terminal you will always get +12V at the coil, instead of the +9V ( or whatever the points system voltage is ) If your getting a constant 12V you will cook the points in no time.

If you connect the additional +12V to the coil via a solenoid that is activated when the starter is cranked it will work OK.

PM me if you need a wiring diagram
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

I have a mk3 starter in my golf. I had the same problem with the solenoid as well. Ended up using the solenoid off the original starter motor, but I've found a solenoid from an Audi starter motor with the 2 spade terminals.
    Hope this sheds some light
