No, the idea behind this is that when the starter is activated it also switches +12V thru to the coil as you mention.
If you connect to the solenoid main with a ring terminal you will always get +12V at the coil, instead of the +9V ( or whatever the points system voltage is ) If your getting a constant 12V you will cook the points in no time.
If you connect the additional +12V to the coil via a solenoid that is activated when the starter is cranked it will work OK.
