Digifant is the Bosch electronic fuel injection used by VW in many models. It comes in 1, 2 and 3 form, but the operating principles are much the same. Mk3 8vs are Digifant 2 from memory, and come in both OBD1 (on-board diagnostic phase 1) and OBD2 95> forms.
IIRC, the 2E is the only OBD1 Mk3 8v motor, the AGG and ADY are both OBD2.
I think Digifant is great, but a lot of people disagree, but I think this is often because most conversions are missing vital parts and so never run properly - this is why you should use a complete donor car if keeping the factory injection/Digifant.
Anyway, in short, Digifant is what a Mk3 8v motor will come with to run - if you ditch it, it's either carbs or a standalone computer.
Mk3s have 85kW and 166Nm - power figure is quite close to a Mk1 GTI but a better spread of torque, due to the bigger capacity. They don't rev very well at all in 2.0 form, though.
Plenty of power to upset most rice "rockets", but won't set the world on fire
The Mk1 2.0 8v that Golfwise built lives up the road from me and trundles past smoothly everyday - apparently it went really well with the carb too
Certainly more poke than the 1.6
