ther were no mk3 engines on carbs, but no reason you cant just bolt up your old carb (or another one).
however i dont know that that would be the issue - i would guess there'd be some extra auto box related electrickery.... Loon?
My original auto box is on its way out and coupled with a tired 1.6 it moves slower than a bus.
I want to drop in a mk3 8v with an auto box, prefrebly one that is still on carbs or single point injection or whatever it is. I dont want to get in to the wiring for injection.
Can anyone provide any info on how to accomplish this conversion?

MK3 Autos have solenoids in them that are controlled by a separate ECU under the back seat. I'm not sure what signalling they share with the main engine ecu.
At a guess you'd probably have to take both the EFI and gearbox electronics across to the MK1.

Mk3 Autos are a bag of poo.
You would need to move all the electronics and associated wiring to the Mk1 and it would need input from the car ecu which is not there on a Mk1.
Easiest solution would be another Mk1 auto box coupled to a pokier engine.
Id go 1.8 Cordoba or CL Mk3 engine as your carb will bolt up and another Mk1 auto.
The Mk1 autos are tough as, unlike the Mk3 ones and I reckon it would be rapid.
Or manual conversion is real easy on a Mk1, dash can stay in, just hook a pedal on the end of the brakepedal pivot and slide in the shifter.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Bugger that if it needs all the electircals.
I think ive mentioned this before but Ive got a 1.9 Audi motor, high tourque extractors and a webber with mani coupled with a 5 speed gti box from a mk1 we wreaked a while ago. The thing is im not to keen on driving manual in the mk1, you can say ive got lazy and enjoy, i enjoy the ease and cruisiness of the auto box way to much.
The auto at the moment has 450ks on it, its realy slugish and heavy (doesnt realy move anywhere untill about 2.5k) and it kickes hard shifting in to 2nd.
How hard are mk1 auto boxes to find and how much do they go for? Also what is needed to change the 5 speed to an auto on the SD motor.

i have pretty much the same problem, my clutch is close to going and my engine is veeery tired as well. im doing the same transfer from MK3 engine to my MK1.
I got told that it would be easier if you get the older MK3 engine, like the 2E. Im no expert so i really wouldnt be able to give you much advice, apart from that the 2E engine has less electricals so i was told or something similar to that.
cheers bro.
depends if you want to run EFI or carby mate?
