    MK3 2L to MK1 Golf

    I'm in the process of fitting a fuel injected Mk3 2L to my early Mk1 and am after information from anyone who's gone down this path before.

    I intend on retaining the factory fuel injection complete with factory immobiliser - Has anyone else done this swap and how did you handle the electrics? Did you use the entire Mk3 loom and splice the Mk1 wiring in or only use part of the Mk3 loom in conjunction with the existing Mk1 wring?

    All suggestions and/or help appreciated.

    Yeah I have done a couple mate.

    Use all the Mk3 wiring, fusebox and ecu.

    splice in your taillights and dash loom.

    The Mk3 Immob runs current through the ignition barrel and key to send a signal back to the ECU. Hence no key, no start.. right?

    So, how do you fit up the Mk3 ignition barrel onto the mk1 steering column?

    There's a recieving coil aorund the MK3 lock. Extract it and the wiring that goes with it, tape the MK3 key to it, stuff it up under the dash somewhere and forget about it.

    to bve nmobved and thenm reattached, then use the Mk3 blinker switches and ignition lock with the key.

    Thank for the reply’s people, still assessing the best approach for this but I am leaning towards stripping the Mk3 loom and only using the engine specific wiring along with a minimal engine fuse and relay panel.
    From the research I've done it is possible to integrate the immobiliser in to the new harness to overcome the "immobilising" function, the other option is to fit the sensor coil to the Mk1 lock barrel - may look in to this as an option.

    I'll post updates on progress as I go.

    Yeah that's what I was thinking, but then you miss out on using the factory immobiliser

    I've found some pics and tips that might be handy. Both parts look very similar, although I'm not sure if the Mk3 barrel pictured below is an immobiliser one.. can anyone confirm?

    I am thinking of going the exact same conversion. Although i got told that it would be MUCH easier if i just used a carbi instead of fuel injection, due to all the wiring problems. I might stick with the carbi as i dont have all the extra cash to be gettign the ecu wiring and all the other hassle that comes along.

    It's all been done before George, take a look through my wreck to race thread. All you need to know about 2.0 into MK1 is in there somewhere.

    I even had a 2.0 running on K-Jet at one stage.

    I think Matt's tried just about every permutation of motors and chassis now too.

    In fact there's a whole section devoted to this very subject called CONVERSIONS. Take a bit of a poke around in there, there's answers aplenty just waiting to be rediscovered.
