I don't believe the golf2 hubs will fit a golf1 but the golf2 calipers will bolt onto to a golf1 hub. Aren't golf1 GTI and golf2 calipers and discs the same?
I have got a set of Mk2 front hubs with the G2 calipers, which are heaps lighter and have a bigger pad than the huge and inefficient Mk1 jobbies.
Can I bolt these onto My Mk1 bottom wishbones? I think I will have to change the bottom balljoint and I have Mk2 ones that will fit.
Will I be able to adjust the steering to fit? Has anyone done this?

Golf one at the back is a massive unweildy thing. The boltholes are bigger and it doesnt have the two prongs sticking out.
Mk2 is same as Mk3 I think. Has 2 smaller boltholes and a different kind of caliper.
I think it will fit, but I will need to align the wheels by adjusting the steering rack.
The bottom ball joints are a different diameter, but hopefully the Mk2 ones fit. Looks like they will.

I thought you knew most things Golf.
Don't do it.
No one else does and for good reason.
Your steering arms aren't long enough.
Your steering arms will angle down as the tie rod end is on the wrong plane causing MMMMMMASSIVE bump steer problems.
Mk2 brakes are the same size as mk1 GTi style one therefore no advantage.
Bottom ball joints may well be different size depending on model.
over and out
I know people have done it in pommieland. Yes you can change the bottom balljoint, thats not the concern. The rack is my main worry. Might see how much adjustment we can get in it. What about Mk2 rack ends, will that work?

Read my lips
"don't"
How can I put it nicely.
I don't want to waste anymore time explaining just trust me ok.
Do you know how to check your bump steer ? No
I tell you incorrect bumpsteer is deadly, particularly on a fwd.
I have used late stuff but have race engineered all new steering arms , repositioned racks, fabricated lower control arms etc only for a race car.
No advantage on a street car.
please forget it
Be care ful when you read about Mk2 brakes as they are different to brakes from a Golf 2. Mk2 brakes started around 1982(?).
Yeah OK fellas, crisis over. I have a 1983 smashed golf and it has the Mk1 Hubs and the Mk2 Brakes. I`ll just swop em out onto my 16v and everyone will be happy. I also end up with spare Mk2 Hubs and brakes!
Thanks for all your warnings GolfWise and Syncro, the hubs are very different.

Matt,
To do this conversion you need to use the scirocco 16v front hubs , they have the steering ball joint mount in the correct position for the geometry to remain unchanged + they can take the 280 dia discs with a spacer on the caliper. I have been told Late Mk1 cabrio's are the same but cant verify that at this point...
Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...
The 1983 Golf 1 with Mk2 brakes will fit straight on as far as I know. Everything else should be the same.
