Mk2 gti box with 2E

Hey guys i need your expert opinions, will a mk2 gti 5 speed gear box work with a 2E engine in a mk1? With no to very little mods? Thanks

Yes, make sure the output flanges of the gearbox match the driveshafts. They'll be 100mm on the GTI box, but not on the MK1, probably 90mm.

Yes it will and it's pretty straight forward.

If you can give us the gearbox code we can tell you more about any differences you might encounter. (Code is stamped into box underneath the bell housing.)

Flanges are one issue, but if you're converting from 4 speed you'll also need a MK1 5 speed gearbox mount and shift linkage bits.

Some gearboxes also had a larger input shaft which simply requires the right clutch disc.

At the moment its running a stock standard 1.6 4 speed but a transplant is imminent in the coming weeks. Not sure on the gearbox, I know of one that may be available soon so i was thinking if im going to all the trouble of switching the engine, may as well go to a 5 speed while everything's out.

What other 5 speeds would be a good option?
