Mk1 thieves in Melbourne

Just a word of warning really.

Last night, some scumbag tried to steal my recently acquired Mk1, twice...

I got home very late and noticed it wasn't parked in its usual spot up the street from my house. (I live in a small estate)
Unusually, I wasn't able to start it yesterday morning which I now see as a blessing in disguise as I see the same thing happened to the would be thieves. I found the car rolled down the street, on a curb, unlocked, doors open, glove box open, ignition turned and wipers on.

I tried starting it to park it back up but had no luck so I did some midnight mechanics to make sure no one would be driving it away anytime soon and locked it back up thinking no one would be stupid enough to come back. I was wrong.

I went down to check it this morning, unlocked again! Ignition on again! and a relay from the fuse box on the floor!

Now i'd usually just say this would have been some kids looking for a joyride in an old car, but to come back twice?
Also there was NO sign of forced entry, the door lock still works and the ignition wasn't busted in anyway.

Could this be someone who really wanted a mk1? who knows. I'd hate to think it was a fellow enthusiast.

No damage to the locks really means they know pretty well what they are doing getting inside.

Not sure really about how you would go driving it away with the steering lock though.

You should sleep inside it tonight with a big hammer.

I dont know much about mk1s and if they are simple or not to get into.
but being there was no sign of forced entry, wouldnt that mean the person/s had a key to unlock the doors?
Previous owner or something?

The steering lock doesn't work on my car unfortunately. I considered sleeping in it last night with a golf club and machete lol but didn't think they'd come back...

Dylan it did cross my mind but the previous owner was the nicest guy, an active elderly VW enthusiast and the address the car is parked at is different to that on the transfer papers, so they'd have no idea where it is.

I dont want to mention publicly (where a theif can read it) how to get into a locked mk1 without a key, but trust me as a long time mk1 owner that its not too difficult.

It was all designed in the early 70's after all.

I'd suggest it's time to get a "The Club" steering lock? But if they are familiar enough with a mk1, they would probably have a spare steering wheel...

We had a similar issue with our old '67 Datto 1000. Got stolen by some kids and joy ridden all arround the suburb. Got it back with no damage, and no fuel...
Dad fitted a kill switch, car got nicked again 2 days later, and didn't return for 6 weeks. It was finally reported to the cops as abandoned in the bushes near our local shops.
They had attepted to start it with a tow rope and another car, and when they finally gave up, they were 5k's away...
They never tried again...

Mate where you lives isnt exactly a street you would normally drive down. Can you park it in your drive way?

A mate had a similar thing with his work truck. After 2 attempts to steal his radio he started letting his black doberman sleep in it. One morning the drivers door was open and there was a very happy dog standing next to it. There were no more attempts after that.
