Mk1 Temperature Red Light flashes when cold

Since buying my new project last week, the RED temperature light on the Temp. Guage seems to flash, but only until the car warms up. Then it goes out and stays out.

I've disconnected the 3 no. separate senders in the cooling system and nothing has yet stopped this silly flasking red light !!

Any ideas???

If it flashes a few times at start up, that's normal. If it continues until the gauge reads half way, somethings not right (obviously!)

Looking at the Haynes manual for carburettor cars, testing of the LED involves removal of the instrument panel and checking the printed circuit board connections. Maybe the temperature gauge itself is faulty? Is the car overheating? loosing coolant?

If it's K-jet, check the top of the plastic coolant bottle. Maybe the temperature switch has corroded/died?

My car is a 1.6 carburettor, BTW.

No the car isn't overheating, as when I went to collect the car (an unseen ebay purchase) I noticed the light flashing on my test drive b4 I handed over the cash. Since driving the car the 1.5 hr journey home that day, I've flushed both the cooling system and sump and re-filled, as I suspected the obviously head gasket problems.

You maybe right and the guage is faulty, however as the temp. guage rises(as normal) the flashing light goes out.

Any other ideas, maybe one of the temp. senders is faulty ???

Oil presure switch maybe, I had to replace mine as it was leaking but now it flashes unless on idle.

Try a new one, about 10 bucks.. either in the side of the block, opposite side to the cam belt, or one on the oil filter housing !

Try bridging the sensor on top of the coolant bottle and see if it goes out.
Its common for these to be broken.

When did the Mk1 come out with a red light on the temperature gauge as I have 2 x Mk1's without these
