nice car man...
you got pictures of it.
Hi, Firstly i'm a newbie to this forum, only recently discovered it. Great site!
I'm the owner of a '78 GTI (german import). The car is a basket case, it's all there except for the front guards and has all the correct bits and numbers etc. The problem is the sunroof was removed years ago and thrown away. All that's left is the hole in the roof. What are chances of finding a sunroof locally? or should just unpick the roof and replace it during the resto?
The other thing is the car is plastic bumper 1600cc 4-speed. It was lhd but was converted to rhd and registered in Vic during the early 1980's. Am i correct in that my car wasn't made in rhd at that stage. For the sake of originality should i chase up and import the lhd bits and convert it back.
Thanks in advance.

My Dad may have a sunroof ill ask him when he gets home from work. Do u know the history of the car?
The roof panel from a MK2 is the same size and shape. You can also use the one out of a Scirocco or early 80s Audi 80.
Could you still use it on the road if you turn it back to LHD?
If you take off the roof, you then need to find a black non-sunroof headlining, even more work......
The RHD GTIs came out in 1979 on a V reg in the UK and I reckon they were all 5 speed by that time, although you could special order LHD GTIs from the dealers.

A bloke who lives around the corner from me has a LHD convertible black Mk1 Golf from California still in LHD state still with Cali plates on it that he hasn't been able to sell (due to the $3000 asking I'm assuming). Its been there for a few years now and is outside too so perishing day by day. Maybe you could make him and offer on it. Sorry this doesn't help you with the roof problem but could be a good parts source.
He's in Heyers Road, Grovedale about half a km from the highway. I'd be happy to liaise with him if it helps.
C-issler.
I have a Mk2 sunroof panel here.
Its metal. If you measure the dimensions of the hole, I`ll see if this is the same.
I`d want $100 plus postage.
I`d leave the car RHD and enjoy it

All those roofs I mentioned are the same dimensions. I have interchanged plenty in my time. 'rocco and Audi 80 are tilt and slide.

The car has an interesting history. The original owner passed away (accident i think) and the car was willed to his brother in Oz. It was converted to rhd in Germany using the correct rhd GTI dash. By the time it got here the brother was already heading back to Germany. It was then purchased locally, registered and was on the road until about 1988. Around the mid nineties it was stripped for resto but the owner decided the body was too far gone (mainly the floors were rusted out due the salt they sprayed on the roads in Europe). Another 2-dr was purchased for a body swap. The bits he didn't need were thrown out but all GTI bits were kept. The old body was only kept because it had all the GTi suspension, exhaust, steering column and wiring loom still fitted.
I now own both cars. Plan to use the second car to restore the first.
Paperwork that come with the car includes German rego papers, owners drivers licence, German owners manual and repair manual. Also have the copies (in German and English) of the original owners death certificate and his will. !!
As well a shipping documents etc.
As for pics? Nothing to show yet except a stripped shell (diamond silver metallic) and another rough 2dr full of parts. I do have pic of the car from the mid nineties.
I'm from Geelong too, that lhd car is not far away at all. The steeing box is all i can use though.(lhd golf is also the same as rhd porsche 924)
I'll have to check out MK2's being wrecked for a sunroof
Regarding that MK2 Golf sunroof, does that sunroof include the rail, cables, handle etc? Do you have those. The previous owner just unscrewed\unbolted the lot and left just the hole!!
I could be interested.
