    Mk1 Race Engine Discussion

    Hey everyone,

After finally getting broadban i have been hooked looking at crazy revving Mk1's... How the hell do they get those revs... I know they run ITB's and all that stuff but what cams do they run...

Just like this one on the dyno its off tape...

That actually looks like a 20v motor hence the large valve area and possibility of high revs.

But it is possible with any golf motor given a crazy cam/cams (valves and valve springs), lightened and balanced to withing an inch of it's life, and as long as you don't sit it at the hamonic frequencies of the engine too long.

Was told for a golf 1600 was one at 7300 and another at about 7800 but not too sure(memories getting hazy).
So basically as long as you power through those revs and don't sit at them all should be fine as long as your components are strong enough.

The same laws apply with any motor. My neighbour has a sports sedan which has a custom full circle knife edged crank that weighs bugger all and his motor is built to rev to 13k.

I had an 1800 MK1 Gti with a BV head that would run to 7700.

I really spoiled that motor when I fitted a 2 litre bottom end on it... Live and learn.

my 1500 use to rev to 7200 with a standard cam and BV head, was a pretty tierd motor and hence why i'm building a 1600 now, i wonder how hard you could get a 1100cc or 1300cc golf engine to rev to, haha

are we forgetting that motorbike engines some how manage to rev to 13k Rpm in most cases, and Vtec honda's rev comfortably to 8k or something.

Audi RS4 (what a car!!! ooops, sprung a leak.. ) has max power at like 7,500 rpm! and from a V8!!

And F1 engines.. 2.5 litre V8's (or something) and like 17-19,000 rpm? damn..

i heard that audi's 4.2L V8 reved to 8250rpm, obviously not peak power but thats still impressive

Lots of F2 cars ahve (had) a 1.6 Golf Motor. They use knife edged cranks, custom rods, big valve solid lifter heads, custom cams and dry sumps and external oil and water pumps. And a big carby or 2. They rev to 9k or 10k or something.

You could apply these principles to a road engine and get huge power.

Is that at the wheels? I think that might be at the fly wheel? Is it 8V or 16V? Carbed or fuel injected?

    Tell me more...
