Mk1 Odometer Repair

I tried to repair my odometer yesterday by replacing the plastic gear that usually splits and runs off the worm gear. I bought the new plastic gear from these guys in the US, 19 tooth count

Seemed to work fine until I got it all back in the car - problem is now the red numbers (100m) dial stops at "9" and wont click over to 1km on the trip part of the odometer and therefore the odometer does not move either???

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thought I had it sorted

Mine did that before I fixed it. I repaired the broken cog and no worries.
Maybe the replacement cog is too small and doesn't engage the trip-meter counter?

ah that takes me back-agree with Jace. Repair the original cog. Make sure you clean the cog thoroughly with metho or similar cleaning fluid to remove all dirt and traces of oil. Use a high quality glue, not a $2 shop special, let it fully cure as per the glue instructions (about 24hrs) then reinstall. This should give you many years of speedo life again.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies, the new one is identical to the old one, however it is brown as per above, engages well, is tight and turns the red numbers ok so it works fine, The problem here is that the red number (in the trip meter part) when it gets to 9 or 900m does not kick over the 1st km of the trip meter and therefore the odometer... I hope this makes sense?

Jace, I followed your diagrams etc in your post so it should work, I have read that the other metal/ grey piece at the other end maybe slipping? I'll have to investigate further

Any other ideas?

I drilled the center of the cog i fixed out to 1/8" and glued it back on.
You might have to dig in deeper then. Before I fixed it, mine would get red 9 and stop, click-click-click and not tick back over.

Hey, I finally got it all to work, the metal wheel just behind the plastic one was slipping. Took that shaft out and burred the shaft where the metal wheel sits on it

All good now
