    The last few numbers don't mean anything, essentially that's Volkswagen individual ID for that car. Everything before that indicates things like manufacturer, assembly plant, model type and year of manufacture (as Michael has explained).

    To find out about LHD etc you'll need to find an options listing if you can. I assume they had these on Mk1s(?), they're usually a series of 3 character codes that would indicate LHD and factory fitted options and other specs.

    It won't look like this on your Mk1, of course, but here is a reference of what I am talking about from our Mk5's manual (a duplicate sticker is also viewable near the spare wheel well under the boot liner):
