mk1 gti vin history ???

Can anyone chase this number up ??? its off my 82 golf cabriolet gti , will this help ??? i do have stickers in side the door sill with usa ect...found 2 dimes under the carpet .....

The vin is on the strut tower. Those are us compliance plates. Or you can get the vin off rego papers.

The VIN reads as follows.

W = Germany, Country of manufacture.
V = Volkswagen AG.
W = Passenger Car.
C = 2 door custom.
A = Engine Type, 1718cc or 1780cc 90hp.
O = Manual seatbelts. If it was a 5, you would have drivers side airbag.
15 = Model Type, Cabriolet.
1 = Not sure, I think it may mean Left or Right hand drive?
C = Model Year, 1982
K = Osnabruck, Germany. Assembly plant.
01259x is just the production number.

and finding a few dimes from the usa , must say it was there at some point too , and some california stickers on the qaurter windows ,,,,,,,,

The last few numbers don't mean anything, essentially that's Volkswagen individual ID for that car. Everything before that indicates things like manufacturer, assembly plant, model type and year of manufacture (as Michael has explained).

To find out about LHD etc you'll need to find an options listing if you can. I assume they had these on Mk1s(?), they're usually a series of 3 character codes that would indicate LHD and factory fitted options and other specs.

It won't look like this on your Mk1, of course, but here is a reference of what I am talking about from our Mk5's manual (a duplicate sticker is also viewable near the spare wheel well under the boot liner):
