I reckon its a 1976 Aussie Built LS with a bodykit on it.

can't say i was ever a fan of those body kits, they tend to hide a few surprises. as for the rest of the body, well looks pretty rough to me...

I agree loon.

The wipers are also facing the wrong direction to be a LHD too!

Proper RHD GTI's weren't available till 79, so all import's uptil then were converted.

not sure if this will help ( the pic), as he did say it was privatley imported , i will get the engine numbers so we can verify this , the plate numbers were on the drivers side , and the engine has been replaced , but i tell you its nothing much too look at when i opend the lid

If it was a GTi it would have a rear wiper for starters. A body kit, plastic bumpers and some red paint on the grill does not make a GTI. Check out the numbers. EG****** should be the correct numbers for a GTI.
