Only issue would be getting it/shipping it could be exxy..

I thought about making one using similar material to the rest of the car.. alfoil and bog..
Sorry for such a late reply on this, I have Sundays free in April, murphy's law decides to hand me a heap of work/shifts the month we should be knuckling down in rally prep.

I have a mate who's works in a shed manufacturing company, so we took some 1.6mm scrap and folded it up, I used Dexion shelving 'L' brackets which bolted on through the A-Arm to mount it behind the sump.

The fold of the metal went at a slight downward angle to clear the sump, then up just underneath the front apron and bolted onto our makeshift 'bullbar' I then re-inforced a bit under the sump with a small strip of 2mm checkerplate, dunno how you'd fix it to yours, perhaps just screw it to the front bar?

So.. We made it.. just.. Both golfs made it to the finish so everyone wins.

Didnt get there without troubles though. We made it through the first day with no issues, but then on the start of the second day we got a rock to the window and it decided to explode.

This meant we had to travel about 200ks on tar and 300ks on dirt without any windscreen.. due to the 199 other cars on the same dirt road, this meant we got very very dirty very quickly.

The next day we where lucky enough to find a home hardware store and purchase some perspex so we could build a new windscreen. So about 45 minutes later, with the help of lots of tek screws and silicon we where all ready to go.
The windscreen worked quite well for the most part, except for needing to clean it every 30 minutes so you could see out of it.

So we cruised along for a while longer.. and then well.. our radiator thought that it didnt like being in one piece and decided it would explode.. now when I say explode.. i mean explode.. The end tanks where blown off it, the radiator was bent and it blew the grille off the car and the head light out of the car as well as moving the battery back in the engine bay..

So there we are.. on the side of the birdsville track asking 'where the hell are we going to find a mk1 radiator in the middle of the desert'.. and a little voice pops up over the road with 'I have one in the back'.. and surely enough Team Jack It had a spare radiator in the back that they where donated..
So we installed it, but then realised it had no external reservoir, so onto the trailer the golf went until we could find one..

That night we were lucky enough to pass a junkyard which happened to have a few wrecked cars in it.. so we got to pulling things apart and scored a nice Falcon reservoir with some piping that we could fit.

There was much discussion about where to fit this magical water retaining device.. and after much council, we decided to go for an external fitment.

With this complete we where on our way. The rest of the trip was fairly hassle free. Still had to clean to windscreen every 30 minutes and had to connect the thermo fan to our high beams, but its all in the name of an adventure.

So thanks everyone for the support and well wishes and enjoy some more photos if you like.

I've had some wild road trips (including last Sunday going/coming back from the VW Nationals where I was hassled by 3 geese) but never have I seen a radiator explode. Great to see you made it back and the car survived.

Loved the makeshift repairs and the pole dancing in the middle of the desert but was it compulsory for everyone to wear women's clothes?

Even one of the head mechanics with years experience at places like Land Rover and West Trac said 'i have never seen that happen before'

The theme for the second day was Priscilla, so there is a bit of an excuse... although for some reason, being in the desert in ****box cars is as much of an excuse as anyone needs to cross dress.
