Thats a little harsh, but to all - take it from a dude that's done more than 200,000km in a mk1 GLD - the diesel 4 speed definately revs lower (but not a lot) than the petrol 4 speed, and would be (and is) just fine behind a petrol engine.
Consider that in my old LS, 1.6 petrol, the standard 4 speed had me doing 4200rpm at 120km/h! Woooo!

4 speed gear box will fit fine, but you will have problems with trying to fit 5 speed gearbox without having to do some modifications to the gearbox mount as 5 speed is 5-10 cm to long....also unless you are good with the electrics dont do the engine conversion as you might strugle to find someone to do it for you, n thats y i sold my mk1shame.....
ps; my avatar wasnt isnt my mk1 its what i wanted it to be........
