Check power at the cut off valve. You should hear it click too when the ignition is turned on.
And block off that inlet port. A piece of hose and a bolt will do the job.
Do these things and the car should run.

My 1.6 GLS will not idle at all. anything below 2000 revs and shes gone.
i have taken the carb (solex 34 pict 5) off and cleaned the ports jets butterflies and the body ,i noticed when i took the carb off that the inlet manifold has a around 20mm connection into it that has nothing on (basically a open pipe into the manifold i) can any one tell me what this is for? as i am thinking it should be connected to something or at least blocked off to stop air ingress ?????.
before this happened the car was running on after the ignition was turned off, now i believe this to be the cut off valve on the carb, does anyone know where i can buy one?
oh yeah the car is normally run on 98 but my girlfriend put 95 in before this happened (the no idle that is) do you think this could be a factor, i did add octane improver but it had no effect

i have removed the cut off valve and the needle that should be there has been cut off !! so looks like a new one i am afraid, will still check for power though as dont want to get caught out if i get a new one.
will block that inlet off ASAP thanks but do you know what is it there for ?

Being a GLS it's a German import. In '77 the emission rules got tighter (things like EGR controls, PCV valves compressed air injection etc became mandatory) and the underneath of the bonnet became a plumber's nightmare. In subsequent years most people stripped off the anti-pollution gear and blocked off pipes etc. My guess is that your open pipe once had a blocked off hose on it and it's fallen off. Must have been large diameter too as a small one would just have produced a faster idle. Looney's right. Stick it back on and I'm sure your problem will disappear.

Have rebuilt the carb and put back on the car, have blocked off the inlet port on the manifold. The car now runs but the idle is now high! i do believe that i adjusted (played with ) the idle mixture screw and the bypass air screw when i had the carb off, is there an easy way to put these back how they should be ?
also the car running on after ignition turned off problem is even worse now, and there is petrol dripping (v slowly )from the right hand the carb (looks like where the throttle butterfly control pin goes through the carb) when the car is running on, is this too much fuel in the carb wrong mix etc ??? no petrol drips when the car is running normally

They're a bugger of a thing. Mine used to run on for ever, I used to see how long I could keep it alive for, I think my record was about 20 seconds Make sure you have the fuel cut off valve in tight enough. And also check all the fuses, as there is one in there for the idle cuircut, my mate once had a problem with his and it blew the fuse every few days, I can't remember why. Also check that the ground wire from the Carb to the motor is intact.
It's all part of the fun and embarressment of driving a good old golf.

Sounds like the mixture is too rich, try leaning it out a bit. The smaller screw. This will help hopefully with the run on problem. These carbs are the worst bit of the old Golfs, you always end up with another problem if you take em apart and dont change every gasket.
I have a couple of later carbys that will fit your car, one from a Mk2 and one from a later Mk1, 1983 model. These are both later twin throat ones and less tempermental than the old single throat jobbies.

The car is now running like a dream 10 times better than before and before it was good, twiddled and prodded and played till it came good.
still running on but have found a new cut off switch on the internet so that will sort that problem when it arrives.
Thanks for the help it was ALL usefull in getting the poor baby going again.
