Nice Mk1 dude!
Looks clean as heck!
I definitely agree about loosing the altezza style lights haha. Nice choice on looking out for some old school racing wheels too, should look most dope.
Here is my MK1 I bought off VWW mid 2011. I bought it as is but have since wound down the coilovers and cleaned up bits and pieces around the car.
The car has the Altezza clear style tail lights which I am not a huge fan of, possibly looking to swap for a set of standard tail lights.
I am off to America in February this year then Japan in March so my money has been filling my savings account instead of going into this thing.
Upon my return I am going to be looking for a second hand set of Racing Hart D Spec. Superlative Racing Dish in a 15x6.5 +43 offset then space them out a bit to clear the inner coilovers. Or either Mugen CF-48 in 14x6 +38 offset or TOM'S Racing 15x7 offset +35.
I want to venture away from the whole played out mesh style BBS wheel found on most MK1's and replace it with one of a kind, old school racing style dinner plate wheel.
As this is the 1.5l 4 spd manual Diesel engine, mods are something I haven't yet investigated. Apart from the oil cooler and intake upgrades done by the previous owner the engine is stock and was dyno'd to make 29hp at the front wheels.
Car still has the original floor mats, owners manual and all electronic devices work perfectly. Windscreen wiper washers work a treat as well. Only thing I have had to replace is the battery.
Stay tuned for more updates after March, any tips and help would be much appreciated.

Welcome mate. seems pretty decent car.
defiantely loose those tail lights. I reckon it'll look better without the number plate surround on there as well. (the black bit on the back)
Good luck with finding wheels. Hopefully you'll get something that's different, yet still suits.
Swapping to chrome bumpers will help it look more old school!
Good luck.
Thanks, might be a stupid question, but, can I use standard MK1 bumpers? I might actually try getting rid of the clear tail lights on eBay or here, I much prefer the standard lights.
With the wheels, I don't want to have too much poke or ridiculousness, more so flush/neat and practical.
tyres size is an important consideration when picking widths/offsets/sizes etc, so keep that in mind too.
Yes, standard mk 1 chrome bumpers will work. (good luck finding a pair ;P) you'll just have to block up the small holes from the side supports of the plastic bumpers if you switch. (or weld, fill, respray if you're that talented or committed)
If you want to get rid of the black plastic piece at the rear under the rego plate, I am interested in it.
Let me know
Thanks
Get rid of the oil cooler. It serves no purpose on a 1.5D. If you want to keep the standard motor I suggest a cordoba 5 speed box along with the flywheel and clutch, replace the exhaust from the manifold back, including the tiny flex section and then consider the governor spring. Then you will be able to cruise comfortably at 130 kms/hr.
THe motor will last forever as long as you dont cook it. The best way to prevent it from overheating is to replace all of the coolant hoses. It may cost you a few dollars but it is worth it. THe hoses under the injector pump are particularly susceptible to failure due to exposure to diesel fuel. I have had the hose from the head to the water pump fail on two different cars in exactly the same spot

Where is the best place to get a set of replacement hoses for the GLD so I can do this job sooner rather than later? Can you buy complete sets or individually?
Thanks
I've purchased hoses off German Auto Parts in the USA. THere may be other cheaper suppliers though.....
