Mk1 failed Dep. of Transport Vehical Inspection

One of the items on items to fix is clips to attach child restraints [3] behind rear seat. The inspector wasn't sure whether they would have come from the factory with them & suggested I talk to a dealer about them.
Has anyone ever seen them on a Mk1, if so what do they look like & are they mounted through the seat belt mounting bolts?
My car is an '80 model. Thanks in advance.

I doubt they cam efitted from VW, could be wrong though. When Robin brought his mk2 in to Australia he had some clips installed in the back of the boot for the child restraints.

Maybe that's the way to go. You could bolt stuff to the seat belt mounts though. Far stronger than the poxy aftermarket clips IMO. Not that anyone actually uses them anyway...........

All cars sold in Australia since the early 70s have the anchorages fitted.
Golf 1s sold in Australia have them in the roof. Instructions are in the owners manual.

Is it Australian delivered (with a compliance plate) or a private import?

    Baby seat anchor point

    Hi jets,

All you need to do is go to an authorised child restraint anchor point installer and get them to approve the previously installed anchor points via a letter or certificate (this may cost you a fee - $50?).

The rego office in the ACT has accepted my reciept for the installation before and passed it (and this was in a '71 super bug). I have also just installed another anchor point into my '76 MkI golf for my 9 month old daughter. (Although I expect this to get very little use as the MkV is the 'family car' )

    Hope this helps.

Gee, where'd this guy come from - MkIs had to have them fitted to be allowed to be sold is Oz - he should know that

Synchro's right - they're are on the roof, just inside the rear hatch.
Covered by plastic plugs that screw out.
I suspect that the rear bench wasn't certified for floor mounting, or the angle was a bit sharp (not sure).

The owners manual doesn't actually talk about it though, which
is naughty - maybe there was an insert or something that I've lost...

Funnily enough my (UK-built) GTI does have them on the floor
... and all three bolts are installed - someone's had three baby seats/capsules in there are some stage

Looks like someone drilled a hole into my body work for nothing

Can you please post a pic of where these mounting points should be, and what they look like? I have just had a look at my '76 MkI, and can't see anything

You're right about the ommission about these mounting points in the manual - very confusing...

Yes it is Aust. delivery with compliance plate. I have just been out to look in the rear roof & by running my hand along I can feel through the headlining where the mounting points are. The car is original & has no plastic plugs.
Another diesel that I have just bought,['79] has a clip/bracket fitted in the RHS roof & plugs in the other 2.
Another '79 petrol 2 door that I own has only 2 plugs fitted [centre & LHS] but the third can be felt through the headlining.
My last mk1 '82, 1.6 diesel 5speed was a private import, converted to RHD but no compliance plate, has been previously reg in SA but has no sign of threaded provision above the headlining.
Thanks syncro & others who knew where they were. I have owned 6 mk1s over 25 years or so & never knew about these mounting points. Shows there is always something new to learn.
I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

All Australian delivered vehicles came with an insert in the owner's manual with details of child restraints and where to cut the holes in the headlining.

I'll have a look for the details if I can find one.

I do have Aug. '78 & Jan '79 Golf manuals, but neither have the insert, therefore has no reference to Aust. seat belt details . This "new' '80 golf didn't come with the book. The car had been stolen at some point of time & the manual wasn't there when the vehicle was recovered not far from where stolen. [Thieves probably not very impressed with 37kw]

Syncro, It would be terrific if you found your copy, scanned the page & send me a PM so that I could turn up at next inspection armed with the facts.
    Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I've had a look around and I can't find it anywhere. Too much VW ****!

Surely someone has one on here?
