Many moons ago I got a booklet called Motorkennbuchstaben - kW/PS from a mate who used to work for VW. It has every engine code prefix until 1994. Ity looks like it was printed from microfiche and on an old Commodore 64 going by the typeset on the inner pages.
1991 Golf GTI Manual - Tornado Red (Little Red Wagen)
1998 Golf Cabriolet Manual - Black Magic Pearl (aka Rommel's Panzer) Deceased/written off
1993 Golf Cabriolet Manual - Alpine White (aka Hitler Youth Wagen) Deceased/written off
1976 Golf LS Manual - Bronco Brown (aka Roadrunner) Deceased/worn out

According to the original instruction manual for my '76 (FN engine):

Unladen weight (ready for road, full tank) -
    • 2 door 780kg for the manual 805kg for auto
      4 door 805kg manual, 830kg auto

    3705mm long
    1610mm wide

    Power - 55kW / 75 bhp @ 5600rpm
    Torque - 119 Nm / 11.9 kpm @ 3200rpm

    Fuel consumption:
    Manual 8.5L/100km (38.2 mpg)
    Auto 9.0L/100km (31.4 mpg)

    Oil consumption per 1000km - 1.5L

That's probably more than you wanted to know, but there is more in the book.

Bare in mind that these are 'official' factory figures.

    Nope, says 1000km.

Mine burns a fair bit of oil but I though that was down to a worn engine.
